And then we went to the big sad NYCACC building and selected more or less at random a small, undernourished black kitten with a patch of white on her chest.

Bio: The story continues: so we took Squid home, and she was wee and skeletal and had no real interest in eating, or anything other than sitting on people. The vet declared her nutrition "fair... not poor! but fair" in an effort to make us feel better, no doubt. She developed a cold, and ate even less, and sneezed on everything in the apartment. (Mostly perched on top of the DVD player, even though electronics : cat mucus :: fish : bicycle.) Then, one day, she went stiff, fell down, and stopped breathing for 20 or 30 seconds. "Kitty! Oh my god! Wake up! KITTY?? Kitty!" And then she sneezed, hopped up, ran off to chase a toy, and has been an unstoppable hell-beast pretty much since then. (So, you see, at least one of those used-up lives is documented. We assumed she must have gotten in more trouble before we got her, so we knocked off a couple more lives.)
