It depends on the particular dog, not especially the breed. And it depends also on the cat. Look for a cat who has been exposed to dogs and shown no aggressive tendancies toward them. Ask at the shelter or rescue if the cat is known to get along with dogs. If they say they don't know if the cat gets along with dogs, move on. Remember that Schnauzers were originally bred as guard dogs and rat dogs, meaning they are very protective and predatory. It's probably not a good idea to get a tiny kitten. When you add a cat to your family, make sure you adopt from a reputable shelter or rescue who will work with you to make the introductions go smoothly and who will always be available for phone conversations and help. They, in addition to your vet, can tell you how to introduce the two. Cats and dogs are not natural enemies, despite what myth says. I have 2 of each and they get along fine. Rely on the rescue and your vet to help you out. Good luck!
