buy him lots of scratching posts, or posts with carpet on it, and encourage him to use them often (scratch his paws on it). also, keep his nails trimmed, so his nails wont be as sharp and he won't cause as much damage.

He may be clawing because he's bored Do you play with him? Try gettin a feather-pole or a laser light and play with him a few times a day. You can also try taping plastic or tin foil to the places he liked to claw. Cats don't like the feel of those.

You just need to train him not to. First of all, trim his claws. Then as Belle suggested, get some scratching posts. Mine love to claw on their trees and a mat made of sisal. Some cats prefer carpeted posts. My sister's cats prefer posts made of wood. Even the cardboard ones laced with catnip that you can get at Wal-Mart will work if you don't want to spend a ton of money on a cat tree. Get a few and put them in each room so he always has the correct place to scratch when he gets the urge. You just have to figure out which Sox likes the best and teach him to use it instead of the sofa. As Izzie said, protect the furniture with the sticky stuff and when you catch him clawing, show him the right place to do it instead. Praise him and pet him when he gets it right. Good luck!
