I have also been using clumping clay litter for 12 years. I have been hearing how bad clay is for the environment and mine and my cats health. I have set up a new litterbox with a pine cat litter for the last week and they are mostly using the clay litter in their original box. So, the next litter I am going to try is "World's Best Cat Litter". I have heard really good things about it. If they don't take to this one then I will try "Swheatscoop". But I will keep two boxes - one of the old clay and one of the new one I would like to switch them to until they are completely switched over to the new litter.

I personally use Tidy Cat Small Spaces for two reasons: (i) it controls odors well and (ii) it's the only litter Oscar will put his feet in. LOL I think TC makes an unscented version as well.

I know there's a brand out there that's made of recycled newspapers. I've seen it at Petsmart, but I can't think of the brand name. Someone smarter than me will probably know. :D

It's called "Today's News", and Oscar J. I am by far NOT "smarter" than you. I just happen, for once, NOT to be having a "Senior Moment" and I could think if it. 8o) I'm not sure if clay litter is "toxic", but I know it's dusty. I use Scoop Away for multiple cats (I have 3). I also use a large scraper like painters use (available at hardware stores) to scrape the boxes before I scoop as the plastic scooper bends and flings poo everywhere when it snaps back when you try to scrape with it. I scrub my boxes once a week with Pine-sol and rinse well. I'm not sure what you could use if you're allergic to the litter, but Yesterday's News might just work. You may want to ask a manager at PetsMart what they think you could use and wear plastic gloves & a mask when you scoop.

we use Tidy Cats. they make an odorless scoopable litter as well as one that is supposed to smell like lemons (which i would reccommend not using, even if you did not have allergies). our cats really seem to like the Tidy Cats. there is also the Breeze litter box, which is really nice. it uses odorless pellets with a diaper-like pad underneath the litterbox. our cats tolerate the Breeze, but they don't seem to like it much (younger cats would probably adjust better than our 10, 5, and 1.5 year-olds). if your cat(s) will use the Breeze, i would reccommend getting it, since you have allergies. it is also supposed to help eliminate odor, because it separates urine and feces. it is easier to take care of, as well. the pellets are supposed to be natural, but i forget what they are made of. hope you find one you like! (i've also heard plain sandbox sand works as a natural litter, if you can't afford a "real" brand.)
