If you were an older kitty we'd sing the praises of the Furminator to remove excess dead hair but you're just a little tyke, that's not your problem. Your slightly longer than normal hair probably just parts funny sometimes because your undercoat hasn't fully come in. It will get better with time.
For now brushing is less about actually keeping your coat smooth and more about setting up a foundation for grooming acceptance to last your lifetime. Your mommy should stick with small, gentle brushes for now so you look forward to being brushed more vigorously later when you're all grown up. She can ask your "V-E-T" what they think about the state of your fur and what sort of brushes they'd start you out on. Our foster kittens have enjoyed soft nylon bristle brushes and plastic bristle slickers with coated tips which are gentle on delicate kitten skin.

First, give him a bath (using shampoo), dry him with a towel, then brush him really good.

My mom, MediaGrump, brushes me & Gary kitties then she baths us. We may not like the bath, but she scrubs and scrubs our fur to get out all the shedding fur. Then she will dry us off as good as she can, then brush them again. MediaGrump has been doing this since I was a kitten and since we picked Gary up from the pound. She does this monthly and we know when it is bath time.
Like I said, both of us boys don't like it, but we accept it. You may have a huge "meowing theatrical production," to let you know we don't like it, but afterward, Gary & I feel so much better and play around so much more.
