Very Calm 9 month old kitten
I've adopted a 5 month old kitten from the county shelter he is now about 9 months and am concerned by how calm and mellow he is. Not very active or play full. He seems healthy, cleans himself ,decent appetite, and drinks plenty of water. The vet recently said he was fine but I dont know can this be normal?

If the vet thinks he's okay, he probably is ...but if you ever have reason to disbelieve your vet ...you know, that feeling that just doesn't sit well in your gut, you should never hesitate to get a second opinion from another vet, or a third. Unless your instincts have consistently failed you in the past, always listen to them ...especially if they feel pressing.
If, however, you don't have a "feeling" something's wrong ...it probably isn't.
I always say, you may not know medicine as well as a doctor, but you know your pets, kids, and your body better than any doctor does, so, listen to your gut and balance that with professional advice and even feedback from wise, critical-thinking friends.
Many cats, like many people, just don't play till someone else strikes up a game of something.

Tag is right. I've gone with my 'gut' more than once with both children and animals. I never hesitate to question doctors, vets or human ones. I am not sarcastic or demeaning of their superior knowledge, but as Tag said, we DO know our animals. When a cat is sick, it's been my experience that the first to go is the appetite. Secondly, they will hide under or behind things. Their eyes look dull, their fur doesn't look shiny or healthy and they aren't interested in anything. If your kitty is simply laying by a window, chilling out with cat tv,this is perfectly normal. This is what Izzie has always done, and I believe it's because he's glad he was rescued and given a chance at a good life. You can try to entice your kitty to play with you. Get some new interactive toys for him. Catster is full of adds for cat toys. Find one that both of you enjoy playing with. Some cats just need to be taught to play, especially if they've lived their lives in a cage with a bunch of oher cats.

It could be that's just his personality. Like Iz said, see if you can intice him with different toys to get some activity in his world. Oscar J. would rather have craft string than all the fancy cat toys at Petsmart. He hates catnip mice but he loves just plain stuffed ones.
Find what works for your little man and just let him be who he is. It could be you just have one cool cat. :D
