trimming nails
I need a good "How To Trim a Cat's Nails" article to pass on to a friend who's never done it herself.

Pockett's advice is spot-on. I'm sure your friend would feel better seeing an illustrated step-by-step though so she knows exactly how to press on the paw pad and avoid the quick. (I advise new clippers to trim very sparingly until they get the hang of visualizing the quick and controlling the clippers) www.catscratching.com is a simple but good guide.
My other advice is that if you have experience you can go do a tutorial so she knows she's doing it right. My human is so big on avoiding unnecessary declaws that she volunteers to go tutor new kitten owners in their homes! She prefers the little scissor-type clippers, but cautions that the ones they sell in big stores for $4-7 are sometimes so big and clunky you can't even use them on most cats! Local Dollar Tree often have perfectly sized little claw scissors and for the same money you can stock up which is nice because they are easy to misplace if you're chasing cats around for their mani-pedis!

I do not have an article but I have advice.
I trim my 2 1/2 year old cat's nails about once every two weeks. It used to be once every 2 months until we moved in with my fiance and his leather couch.
Purchase a cat nail clipper set.
It helps to have someone there to help you. Have them hold your cat by the scruff of the neck while you quickly trim. Make sure to not trim to far down to the quick or you will cause your cat to bleed and up the chances of an infection.
If you do not have someone to help you, then I usually just kind of wrestle with my poor cat. I use a towel to wrap her in so that she cannot scratch me with her back paws.
The more you do it the calmer your cat will respond.
I also make sure to speak softly and calmly to her and giver her treats while doing so and after.
Hope this helps!
