Raw food, cat's face

I know this is probably going to sound a little odd, and overly paranoid, but we are getting a pair of kittens in a couple of weeks who are currently fed a mix of foods, one of them being raw.

I am not worried about touching it myself, or the bowls, or even the fridge. I'm worried about them getting it on their faces, and using their paws to clean themselves and ending up with raw food and possibly nasty bacteria (I took a food sanitation course once, so I know what could be there) on their paws and their faces and then cuddling with my kids.

Is this something I should be worried about, or is it something that's not really an issue when feeding raw food? Do the companies that make raw food have to follow food safety standards/testing for things like salmonella? I don't have enough confidence in getting the nutrients right to not go with an outside company.

From what I've heard, feeding raw food is a commitment. I'm not sure I would have the dedication to do so and do admire those people who do feed raw. You can always purchase baby wipes to clean the babies off once they're done eating, but most likely, they will groom themselves if they've been taught right by Mamacat. And, in the wild, cats and other animals eat raw all the time. If it were dangerous, there would be no wild animals or feral cats. Good luck, join us here at Catster and post baby pictures!!!

We have our 2 cats (both adult rescues) on Nature's Variety Raw Nuggets (Venison & Lamb). Both of them took to it immediately, we didn't have any transition period. They've been eating it for 5 years now and we've never had a problem with it.

We defrost in small ziploc baggies.. so it's only in the fridge for 3 or so days at a time. One of our cats is a very large male so I leave his nuggets whole but for our smaller female we cut the nugget into 4-5 pieces. We put down the food -- they eat it within 2 minutes -- we pick up the dish and wash it in hot water.

I think it's a problem for people used to leaving food around for their pets or if their cat is a particularly slow eater but we've never had that issue. You have to worry about bacteria developing when the food is room temperature for a while.

I wouldn't worry + the health and litterbox benefits (smell is very reduced) are worth the tiny bit of extra effort!
