http://www.catster.com/answers/question/no_sleep_for_the_humans-31814 Namerovsky always wakes up at about 5 AM. He comes to sleep with us at night, maybe 1 AM. He gets up and starts playing with crap in the room. When he gets put out of the room, he tears up the apartment and makes a ton of noise, knocks stuff over. I can put him outside, but I don't like him outside during the morning hours when everyone is leaving for work. And when I do put him outside, he comes back in a lot of the time (we still don't know how he gets in). And I'm sick of having to get up and put him out of the room, then out of the house. He plays all day, goes outside to burn energy...he is neutered. About a year old. I just want some sleep! I know it seems like this is ridiculous, but I really can't think of a solution. Everywhere we close him, he makes a ton of noise...knocks over the bathroom, etc. He came from the shelter and used to bang on our door, but now he understands we aren't abandoning him so he doesn't do that anymore. If it gets attention, it will continue. They do what they can to get what they want. Remember also that cats are basically nocturnal. They are more active at night. Playing with Oscar before bedtime has helped with his wanderings at night. Our game of choice is "chase the laser pointer." Also he and the dogs like to chase each other around the living room before bed so that helps too. Good luck. Love your kitty's name BTW!

He likes to sleep outside during the evening and doesn't think twice about waking me to let him out and then of course in around 4 am. I guess I'm used to it though because honestly it doesn't bother me. It only takes a few minutes to get back to sleep. I can see how it can bother other people, my friends tell me I'm just a sucker for punishment. ;) Maybe your little guy is hungry. Have you tired leaving a bit of dry out before you go to bed? Another thing you can try is completely ignoring him even when he is knocking things over. Cats are smart and he knows by doing this he gets a reaction, gets attention. Close all doors and try to keep things picked up. You can also play with your cat in the evening. If you notice he sleeps during this time, get him moving by playing with him. Get him tired.
