Nellie has dandruff???
Nellie has these white flakes on her back, i think its dandruff. It gets worse if on her back near her tail. Nellie is healthy and she is not overweight. These white flakes have been a chronic problem. We have tried brushing it out but it only makes it worse. Does it anyone have any reccamindations to help get rid of these flakes?

The lower back is the hardest place for a cat to reach when she grooms herself. A bath should loosen and wash a lot of that away. HyLyte Shampoo and Creme rinse works well as it is soapless and won't dry the skin like shampoo could. It's available at vet offices or I've seen it at PetSmart too. Another trick I learned at cat shows is Listerine works great for dandruff too. You might also want to schedule a vet appointment to make sure there's no medical reason for the dandruff/dry skin.

Nellie--and I, the Human here, almost got named that--appears to be a bit hefty. I'm not pointing fingers here. Spike needs to go on a diet and I'm simply too lazy and irresponsible to do it. Bottom line--dandruff can be a sign of diabetes. Overweight kitties are prone to diabetetes. Sigh. (No, Spike does not have diabetes...yet.) Diabetes aside, overweight kitties are also prone to be unable to groom themselves properly. Spike went through a period when he couldn't groom himself properly and had a dandruff problem. I'm not a vet. just a cat observer. Go to your vet and get a full blood panel. If there are weight issues involved, get a full consultation regarding how many calories your cat must have per day, and how long it should take to get your weight goal. Good luck and purrrs..
