Natural remedies for fleas? But What about heartworm control

I've read many articles about natural remedies that deal with fleas and such but what about heartworm control? I have heard lots of negativity about using chemical treatments to control such parasites, so what about internal ones? I will have an indoor cat with the exception of a leashed walk, but how do you control parasite that come from mosquito bites and the like?

To be honest, I've never heard of an organic or natural heartworm control/preventative. Most vets will agree that the chance of side effects from ivermectin, which is the medicinal heartworm preventative, is far less serious than the infection itself. IMHO, I would rather use the medicinal preventative than take a chance with an unknown and untested homeopathic remedy that might not work.
