Imagine yourself in his place. his whole world is suddenly turned upside down, new owner, new home, different food, new rules, new people. He misses his old owner and all the things that went with it. Give him a chance, when you adopted him you made a comitment. Just let him do his thing, talk to him even if you think he is ignoring you. when he does feel safe to come out offer him a treat. put it on the floor first, and walk away, when he thinks that nobody is going to hurt him, move it a bit closer and ignore him. It can take time a lot of time. As he settles in his new home, providing nobody frightens him, he will feel safer. Eventually he will seek you out in little ways. If he is eating you have already won the battle. It just means loads of patients. I know that you want to pick him up and cuddle him, but this is only going to happen on his terms. If you cannot have the patience and commitment to him, then take him back. He needs time. being in a shelter wouldnt have helped either.

Your cat is way more scared of you than you could be of him. Abused, Ferrell whatever. Your bigger than him and have the power to hurt him. I'm guessing this is all he knows. Be patient. Let him come to you. Imagine what it would take for you to overcome your fear of something that has only caused you pain. Think of uncle Bernie. How hungry you would you have to be to take a sandwich from him. Sounds like you got a brave Kitty who's worth waiting for.
