my grandmas 12 year old cat is fat
my grandmas 12 year old cat is obice she refuses to be picked up to be put on a scail but when she lays down she filled up the wide hall way and her legs disapear. Grandma will not take her to the vet and fills up her food dish when ever it is empty or less then half full.

There's no question that her kitty desperately needs to lose weight - she's at risk for diabetes, kidney disease, arthritis, and heart problems. but it has to be done slowly or she could develop serious liver disease. She should be put on canned food (no dry) and the portions cut way back. A vet really should give her a check up and figure out how many calories she should get per day. Most sedentary cats do fine with about 220 calories divided into 2-3 meals per day. Go to catinfo.org for information on feline obesity. There's a link to a chart that has calorie content for many canned foods. Good luck.

I'll add that putting her on a light, low calorie or weight management food would probably be a good idea as well. I eat Evo Weight Management dry food & it works well for me. When I don't eat light, low calorie or weight management food, I tend to gain weight.
