My cat's purring seems laboured?

My cat is very young - he's only a year and three months old. I adopted him from the shelter and he's a very happy and appears-to-be-healthy cat. I had brought him to the vet after I adopted him, and other than earmites, the vet gave him a clean bill of health. He's also a very vocal cat and meows all the time - I'm just worried about his purring.

When he purrs, it sounds as if it's laboured. (Sounds like a cat who's been smoking! Or similar.) When we brought him to the vet initially, he had a fever and she said that his thyroids seemed a little big but didn't investigate further. His appetite is just as big as ever (he meows constantly to be fed and drinks fine) and he plays all the time. He doesn't seem to be in any kind of pain. Am I over-reacting, or will this require another vet visit?

(I say another as I've been to the vet more times than I can count lately with other pets of mine).

Thank you!

If that's the way his purr has sounded since you've had him and it's not a new thing, I wouldn't be concerned. Cats each have their own distinctive purrs. One of ours purrs very quietly and softly, usually it can be felt rather than heard, and he only purrs when he is perfectly calm and content. The other purrs all the time and can be heard across the room, it sounds like a motor trying to start. Both are perfectly normal, and I find it fascinating that they're so different!

If it were me, I would want to take him in for a follow-up vet visit anyway, to make sure his fever is resolved and his earmites have completely cleared and to see if his thyroid will require any attention. Then you can ask about his purr, but I don't think it sounds worrisome.

Congratulations on your new cat!
