There could be a few reasons. He was probably in some other cat's territory or encountered an unfriendly dog (or person) and spent a lot of time running up trees and back down again. He may also have been trapped somewhere and tried to dig himself out. If his feet are bloody, someone may have tortured him. In any case, if he were my cat, I'd take him to the vet just to have him checked over and make sure he's 100% OK even if he's acting allright. And, if he's not neutered and he's in the habit of running away, he needs to get fixed.
