my cat is pooping outside the box, not urinating just defecating....

I have 2 cats and one box. One of the cats is fine, the other one has gotten really fat and has begun defecating outside the box. He urinates in the box and even defecates in the box some times but many times he goes outside the box just around the vicinity of the box. But just recently he has expanded his territory.

Sounds like you need to get another litterbox. One for each cat. Some cats urinate in one box and defecate in the other. The litterboxes need to be kept very clean or soiling outside the box will occur. I don't think this is a behavior problem. If it continues after you have kept the boxes (2 boxes) clean, then take kitty to the vet for an exam.

I agree with the other poster. 2 cats require 2 litterboxes. Scooped frequently to be as clean as possible. Is it already "used" and not so fresh when he chooses to go outside of it? Also because you mention that he is overweight, please be sure that the box is large enough for him to be comfortable. And you also need to discuss the weight issue with your vet and get him on a diet if necessary. Being overweight is just as unhealthy for them as it is for humans.

I would advice you get another litter box. Some cats urinate and poop in different places that should help. Its a general rule of thumb to also have one litter box per cat just for sanitary reasons. As well make sure you keep the litter boxes clean for if you don't then he will more then likely start going outside the litter box again.
