My cat is hiding and i dont know what to do.

My cat is hiding and I dont know what to do. I have never been mean to her and she is not a kitten, she has lived in our house for 10 years and she comes out when my dog who likes to chase her is in the house but when he is not there she hides and I dont know were she is and sometimes I make the mistake that she has run away because she is not and outdoor cat she only stays inside. I want to stop being worrid about her. What should I do?

This could be very dependent on the details of your home life.

Some kitties get stressed out by a new (or any) change to their environment. They can also sense the mood in household and if something is off-kilter, say a child going away for the summer or leaving for college, human stress or even just missing the dog could get them stressed or even depressed - and hiding.

You kitty is also older to middle-aged depending on the breed. Sometimes, cats draw in as they grow older.

Try cuddling with her when she is out and giving her treats when she comes to you when you call.

You could also take her to the vet and see if she has anything else going on. Sometimes, cats hide if they do not feel well, same as people. Maybe she needs an antibiotic and a little TLC.
And if it is just stress, well, there are even medications for depressed or stressed out kitties.

Whatever the case, I hope she'll be out and maybe even underfoot soon.

Izadore (Izzie)

I'm sorry that you are so worried about your kitty. Toby gives excellent advice. We aways tell people that when there is a sudden change in the cat's behavior, they need to at least call the vet. Older cats, like older people, need to see their vets more often. If she hasn't been in a while, at least call them for their advice. I can tell you that right now, Izzie is lying next to me in his bed looking out the window, but as soon as I get up to start cleaning, he most likely will be under the bed and I won't see him again until evening. If you are worried, you must suspect something is wrong. Please check with your vet (or if you're a kid, talk with your parents and ask them if you can call the doc). Good luck and purrs!
