I've seen cats do that. I think that they are cleaning their nails.

Sam

Mine usually do it when their nails are getting too long and need a trim.

Tutti - LAF

We all do this. It's definitely part of cleaning as long a they don't overdo it and the nails don't disappear.

Boris

Sam is right. Some cats do this if you groom their nails too infrequently. Mom was very busy last month, so she went three weeks without trimming my nails (I wasn't too concerned but mom said I was hurting her when I tried to knead on her). I started biting my nails when grooming the rest of me, until mom trimmed my nails last week. Haven't done it since.

Schmoo

Yes, quite normal, especially the back feet. Cats' nails grow not only in length but they grow in layers. Usually the nails shed the layers by themselves (through the use of a nice scratching post or box) but sometimes they require "manual" grooming by the cat, which is why Meeko is biting his nails. It's part of his normal grooming habits. Sometimes I hear my cats doing it all the way across the room! I always think it's just like me using a nail clipper or an emery board.

Izadore (Izzie)

Meeko may also be getting pieces of litter or other things that are stuck in his fur between his toes. Every so often check his feet yourself. It's not a bad idea to get your cat used to having his feet handled as it makes claw trimming so much easier! Izzie and I "hold hands" each night and I rub his paws constantly. He doesn't mind at all when I trim his claws.

Snowie

My cat also bites her nails, in the process of grooming and cleaning, cats do also see to their nails...I am pretty sure this is perfectly normal. But you might want to consult a pet behviourist or vet or pick up a book on cat behaviour if you want a more professional opinion. You might also google this to find out more information.

Mysty (The Princess)

I do it too-when I groom. After all I have to keep them clean! Mommy also gets them trimmed-jeez, after all that work, then I have to start over!

Paisan =^..^=

Most of my cats do it to some degree. I try and keep their nails trimmed. But that does not always stop them from biting anyway. If they are persistant, I try and check the nail to see if there is a problem or the area is irritated. If I suspect a problem, they go to the vet.

Sasha

My brother Mao Mao and I do this as part of our grooming habits. Sometimes the outer layer of the claw will shed also.

Yes, my Sis and I also bite our nails when you are grooming. Sometimes Mom finds the nails we have shed around the house.
