Litter box smell?

I have two kittens, both around 3 and a half months old. I got them about a week ago from the animal hospital and they're strong and healthy.
They eat natural kitten food, and I clean the litter box 2-3 times a day.
I bleached the litter box and thoroughly washed it today and put in new litter (the litter I use is not a big name brand, just generic) could the litter I'm using be the cause to why it smells so horrible in the room?
I understand that cat litter will never smell super great but, any tips on how to make it smell better? Because after the 4th or 5th day the room smells like something died in here.

Once again, Allie's right. Even though your babies came from an animal hospital, they will need another series of vaccinations and a stool check. As for the "generic litter", we used that and we found that it is dustier and does not absorb as well as the name-brands such as Allie uses. I now use Scoop Away for multiple cat households and have never had an issue with odor even when Izzie was younger. It sounds like the litter is holding the odor, but I understand you can't change litter each day as that would be expensive. I also leave the ceiling fan on in the room 24/7, btw. That helps circulate the air. If by "natural" food you mean it's meat content is high or you are feeding raw, this could also affect the smell.

Well, it could be the litter. Does it smell bad even when it's just been scooped or do your cats have stinky poop? Kittens at that age have very little smell to their urine but if their poo is super stinky then they may have intestinal parasites of some sort. Giardia poo can clear a room. And you should get a sample tested at your vet. My vet likes to have a sample to test in the first 6 months even if there is not a problem but that is a little over the top. However, if it's not the poo itself that is gross then I would try a better litter or else buy a covered litterbox and use a plug in air freshener in the room. I like Arm & Hammer and Scoop Away which work really well for odor. I get it at BJs and it's only about $13 for 42 lbs. It doesn't pay to save money on cheap cat litter because you are the one who has to smell it.

if it truely smells that bad after a few days and you are scooping it out regularly i would pop back to the vets and have a chat it could be their food or worms or anything but it does deserve further investigation good luck

I, too, use generic litter.

I either buy the Kroger brand litter or I buy the litter that is .28 cents a pound at Pet Supplies Plus. So, don't think it's the litter. Because it's probably not.

I would say that you need to replace the box regularly, but seeing as you have only had the kitties a few months, it's probably not time for that. I replace my cats box every 6-8 months.

But, my female cats poos and pees smell horrendous. I use this word lightly because it's not an accurate word for how bad it smells. So after reading a couple books, tried something they suggested.

Line your box with Glad Press and Seal and put either Arm and Hammer baking soda in the box, or the product that is specific for sprinkling in the kitty litter to help with smell. Arm and Hammer makes one, but I buy the Kroger brand and it works just as good.

If the problem still persists. I would check the room for pee-pees outside the box, on the carpet or tile.

I hope this helps.

I use Fresh Step for multiple cats. It is more expensive than generic but it is definitely worth the extra couple of bucks. I never smell anything bad! It has a really fresh smell and I love it.
