Is this a good time to get a second cat?

We got a neutered male cat 3 weeks ago. He is just starting to come around and let us pet him. We really want a second cat, and were considering another male. We are concerned about spraying even though we would get the second cat neutered as well. I know cats can be territorial so I was thinking this might be a good time to get another cat because our cat now has not really "established" his territory. The cat we have now has been around other cats, but on a limited basis, and it was a female. He just played with her. Please give me some advise. I'm pretty new to cats. I havnt had a cat since I was a kid.

In my welfare organization, we always recommended that you adopt 2 cats at the same time. Socializing was easier that way. However, you can still bring home another cat. If you feel that having this first cat for 3 weeks has given you enough time to really get to know him, then there's no reason to wait. However, be aware that bringing in another male, especially an unneutered one, could cause issues. If the 1st cat seems docile and non-confrontational, then things will go easier. But, if he is timid and shy, it could prove difficult. Your best bet is to go back to the shelter and chat with them. They know their cats and will remember your cat. They can advise you on any cats they have that would fit into your situation, possibly even one your cat liked while he was there. Also, spraying is helped by neutering/spaying a cat, but it's not a cure. Your cats may still spray if there are territorial issues.
