Tabby is neither a breed nor a color and never was. It is a pattern, either classic tabby or mackerel tabby. The classic tabby cat has a bull's eye pattern on his/her side. The mackerel tabby has stripes. Tigger looks to be a red and white mackerel tabby domestic shorthair cat. There are also patched tabbies which are combinations of tabby and tortiseshell markings. Tabby markings come in a variety of colors - brown, red, cream, cameo, silver....and are found in many purebred breeds as well as domestic shorthair cats.

LOL. Coloration is not breed, although a colorpoint cat probably has a Siamese ancestor lurking in the background. Tabbies are said to be Nature's default coloration. You can find tabbies in almost every breed, from Maine Coon to Oriental Shorthair. The vast majority of cats have no breed, unlike dogs. People seem to want to assign breeds to cats, heence using coloration. A cat doesn't need a breed to be special.

Tabby cats were never a recognized breed; they are American (or domestic) short haired cats.

Tabby was never a breed. Tabby is a color pattern and can exist in many breeds and colors. The pattern has whirls or stripes and they have an M on their forehead. My Persian Lucy is a Red Tabby with white.
