Is my cat depressed? bored? How can I help her?
My cat Alice is about 3 years old. She and her newborn kittens were saved from the mean streets of Brooklyn a year & 1/2 ago from a kill list and I was lucky enough to get her around the same time. At the time I was in a relationship and had another cat. She and the other cat did not seem to get along very well. As of May, they were getting along better but hissing and growling could still be heard from Alice. Anyway, relationship ended - he took the other cat and I have Alice. We figured they would be happy split up but now Alice is meowing and staring at me all day while I work. I try to play with her about 20-30 min a day but she seems bored or something. At night she runs around and meows too. We have been 2 (instead of 4) as of May 11th... maybe just time is needed? Any advice would be great. She is making me so sad to see her so sad. HELP!

She probably does need more time to adjust to the changes. The other human is missing as well, even if she did not like the other cat. Does she have a cat tree to climb on and places to look out the windows? Cats need things to keep them entertained other than their people. Mine love to watch squirrels and birds and even bugs or leaves outside the window. Whatever you have outside of your windows is still more interesting than whatever is going on inside. Mine all come to me for attention throughout the day but for the most part they are content with napping and window sitting. They have each other but Allie honestly does not interact with the others much. She has her favorite window with a chair in front of it and she hangs out by herself watching stuff and napping.

When my single cat was bombarded by three others, he acted the same way. He was so sad and wouldnt even eat but he eventually came around. I gave him some extra cuddles, treats and toys. I gave each cat their own scratching post and I bought a big cat tree that they can all fit on. I made sure he got a little extra love so he didnt feel replaced. He eventually snapped out of it but it took a few weeks. Give her some time, if after a little while she doesnt adjust, take her to the vet just for good measure
