Casper

Is Casper allowed to go outside before his 2nd vacination??

Casper has had his first(1st) vacination a few weeks ago and he is longing to go outside. So one day we put him outside just to see how he would cope. He was the most excited kitty that day, believe me!! The vet said not to put him officially outside till his 2nd vacination but now we are letting him go outside when we are watching him to make sure he is safe. Of course we only let him out into the backyard not onto our front yard and i am doubtful anything will happen to him but please are we allowed to do is before his 2nd vacination or is it absolutely no way standard?? I need an answer fast so me and my family can either put a stop to it or keep letting him go outside!
Thanx for answering everybody that will and did!!

It sounds like Casper enjoys the beautiful outdoors! I've got plenty of cats and they each have their own likes and dislikes. Some of them are indoor-only cats, but I've also got a handful that are determined to go out frequently even if they have to leap out the door between my feet! I believe that kitten shots are given about 4 weeks apart, so he should be due for the second set soon. You might as well let him go and just keep a close eye on him if he enjoys it that much! ALL cats and dogs should have a rabies shot once they have been weaned long enough for their mother's antibodies to clear their system so it will be effective. Most vets give them at least 2 FVRCP shots for basic protection. For his protection from all those nasty diseases that lurk out in the big, bad world, Casper needs to be tested and vacinnated for FeLV, FIV, and possibly FIP. If you can, teach him to stay in your yard and Not to go past the sidewalk - he'll live years longer! Children play too!

My personal opinion is that you should make Casper an indoor-only kitty (sorry, Casper). Even when you are watching every move he makes outdoors, you never know when another cat or a dog is going to appear and fight with him and/or give him fleas or worse. I don't know what your neighborhood is like, but cats who are allowed outdoors get run over, contract fatal diseases, get kidnapped or tortured...Indoor-only cats have longer lifespans than indoor-outdoor cats. If you must let him out, I'd follow the vet's advice and not allow him out until he's had his second round of shots. Not that vaccinations are 100% effective, either.,,

Kittens receive vaccinations to stimulate their immune systems against that particular disease. They get these vaccinations every four weeks until they've received three sets. Since Casper has only had one set of shots, I doubt if his immune system had made enough antibodies yet to protect him against what he might find out there. In addition, he needs a rabies shot if he's going to be an outdoor cat, and I think he's too young to get the full shot yet. You really need to follow the vet's advice. They tend to get annoyed if you don't. I know from my own experience with outdoor kitties--having lost Ernie on the road in 2008, that you can't "watch" them every second. Having an outdoor cat myself (Lily), I don't crusade against outdoor kitties but I know they have a shorter life than indoor cats. It's an individal decison. But, no, I would discourage you from letting Casper outside until the vets says it's OK.

ABSOLUTELY NOT! If you must let Casper outside at all (he should be an indoor only kitty. It is much too dangerous to allow a kitty outside at all!) you have to wait at the bare minimum until a week after his 16 week shots are complete. Casper MUST be neutered before being allowed outside.

There are so many threats to cats outside, diseases, cars, strangers, cats, dogs, large birds and so many other things its just not worth it to let them out.
