I think she could be sick?
This morning my cat threw up and in the vomit was poop. How do I tell if there isn't something worse before taking her to a vet. She has seemed fine since but I won't let her outside or eat too quickly. If this is simply an anemia then great I change her food, if it is something worse how can I get an idea of what it is before taking her to the vet? (I am broke and need to prevent taking her to the vet, if it's unavoidable fine but if it is something I can fix at home better)

what u r probably seeing is a hairball that looks like a rolled up piece of poop like a cigar or round like a ball...... it happens to my kitties all the time !!!!! the next time it happens take a small stick & press into it !!!u will quickly find out that it is not fecal material but just ur kitties way of cleaning out his or hers stomach, try feeding hairball therapy gel on ur finger tips twice a day to lubricate their stomachs !!!!! let me know how u make out !!!!!

When one of my 3 bring up a hairball, it's usually accompanied by just yellow bile, and if they were eating catgrass, some of that. It is an elongated pellet and actually doesn't look like a ball at all. If your cat is tossing up her entire meal, then it's something more serious. If she's lethargic or hiding, then she is ill. Changing her diet won't necessarily cure anemia and could cause greater gastric upset. Keep an eye on her, and if her condition changes, she vomits more than twice a day or if her bahavior changes, then call your vet. Most vets are very aware of their patient's financial situations and will work out a payment plan for you. Good luck!

I have a feeling that the poop in the vomit wasn't poop at all, but a hairball. Throwing up hairballs is actually a really good thing. If she only threw up once, then there's no cause for concern. If she's acting like herself (playing, eating, drinking, etc), then she's ok.
Anytime you do have to take her to the vet, if you are having trouble paying, you can apply for care credit. www.carecredit.com
