If you haven't done so yet, look for soft cloth surgery collars. I saw one on a doggie once, and it looked like the sort of thing with velcro snaps where you could get away with wrapping it a little big snugger than the regular plastic one if necessary due to the individual size of the pet. I wish I could remember the brand name of that collar but I don't. Better yet, if you are crafty and can get your hands on heavy canvas cloth, you could try to sew your own version of a soft cloth collar to put on him. Sorry not to be of anymore help, but I hope this will at least point you in the right direction.
