Searching for someone to take care of your animal(s) while you're gone is a lot like searching for a babysitter for a human child. It's always a good start to ask family, friends and your vet for recommendations. Anyone can put an ad in the paper, and it's up to you to go with your gut instincts. If something feels or sounds "funny' to you, go on to the next person. Ask for references. Have the person come over a few times before you go to get to know your animal while you're there. Watch the interactions. How does the animal react to the person? This is very telling as I believe animals do have a "sixth sense" about good and "bad" people. Remember that you get what you pay for, and if you go 'cheap', you'll probably come home to a dirty litter box and weirded out cat. If at any time you question the person sitting for your animal, go with your instincts. Be open and honest with the person and expect the same from them. Rescue organizations also may have sitters they can recommend.
