If you haven't taken your baby to the vet yet, now is the time to find one. Kittens, like puppies, need vaccinations and exams that will keep them healthy and long-lived. The vet can also test your kitty for worms, which could make her look "fat". This is a simple fecal test. At that time, with pen and paper in hand to note the vet's answers, ask about her diet, tell what you are currently feeding and ask about amounts. You can also ask if they think leaving food down all day is Ok or if you should have dedicated daily feeding times. When I have my animals checked out by our vet, it gives me great peace of mind that I am doing all I can to keep them with me for as long as I can.

I agree with everything Izzie said and your vet is the best one to advise on the proper weight for your cat. I just wanted to add that the proper weight for my cat is not necessarily the proper weight for YOUR cat. For example: I have Destiny who is perfectly normal and healthy at 5 1/2 pounds full grown and Allie who is the same breed and she is perfectly normal and healthy at 9 pounds. Her frame is so much larger. I have some in between and some even heavier. All the same breed. Whenever my vet has given me a suggested feeding amount it is based on the frame of that specific cat. The feeding instructions on the bag or can are just averages.

IT definitely depends on breed and age. i have a tiffany and her ideal weight will be between 8 and 9 lbs when she is full grown. Definitely ask you vet!
