How long does an upper respiratory tract infection last?

My cat has been sick for 7 days. I have already taken him to the vet. He is taking an antibiotic. I was just curious how long will he be sick?

It depends on a few things. Remember, the antibiotics only work on a bacterial infection and a URI is a virus. The antibiotic takes care of any underlying infections, it does not "cure" the kitty cold, which a URI is. Make sure you give the antibiotic until it's gone, usually 2 times a day for 7 days. A human cold can take up to 2 weeks to disappear entirely and kitty colds are the same. Try to make sure your kitty eats and drinks as much as possible. The antibiotic can upset their tummies and a cat won't eat what it can't smell. If your cat is not eating, try heating up some wet food in the micro until just a bit warmer than out of the can-it will release more scent that way. Make sure your kitty stays warm. If he's an outdoor kitty, keep him in. If your kitty is truly still sick and suffering with this URI, then you need to contact your vet for further treatment. There are other antibiotics they can try, and he may need to be rehydrated.

Izzie is correct. @--->---- a flower for Izzie.
An antibiotic won't clear up the RTI it only helps to prevent a secondary infection. It could possibly take a few weeks for this to completely clear up.
