How do we get our kittens to stop suckling?
My husband and I adopted two kittens last fall. Both were found in a storm drain when they were very young and their mom was no where to be found. They were bottle fed for a while, but are now around 7 months old and eat regular kitten food with no problem. I understand it's comforting to them, but when they start doing it to our hands or clothing, it's not the most comfortable of things. Any suggestions?
Thank you!

Because of their early days, they did not have the separation "lessons" that most cat moms give to their offspring. Lizzie is a cat who can't hold her "likker" and I agree, it IS annoying. I break out in an itchy rash when she does this and have scratched until it scarred. When Lizzie starts doing this, I simply do not tolerate it. But do understand that these guys aren't doing it to annoy you. It's a deeply ingrained comfort mechanism. You can substitute a blanket or towel or even stuffed animal. You can put one of your shirts on whatever you use so that it smells like you. Don't tolerate the sucking or licking. Gently say "no lick" and put them on the floor or give them the "OK" substitute. Cats do understand "no" as long as it's done kindly and quietly. They are still babies and it is up to you to be the mom cat and teach them how to get along in life.
