How common is it for cats to have amber eyes?

Our vet said that it was very uncommon to have four kittens with amber/copper-colored eyes out of the same litter. I was wondering: How common do you think it is to have most of a litter of kittens come out with amber eyes? Does it have something to do with what they eat or something?

Eye color is controlled by genetics. Their diet would have nothing to do with that. There are several breeds where copper is the standard eye color. But even with Persians where copper is the normal color that goes with most fur colors, they are often more yellow like Allie has. It is just due to one of the parents of the kittens having the gene for copper eyes in his/her family tree. But the vet is right, a litter of mixed breed kittens having the same eye color for all 4 is uncommon no matter what color that might be and having copper would be even less common.

Penny

Yup genetics, you got some adorable lucky kittens!

Penny is relatively rare also. She's a female red tabby. Only about 25% of orange tabbies are female. And she has true amber colored eyes on top of it. She's my lucky Penny!

(Japeta Orinoco) George

Hi there,i have copper eyes, because of my breed(i'm a britsh shorthair blue).I was born with blue eyes as was all my litter mates.I was about 3 months old when mom and dad brought me home and my eyes had changed, all my litter mates had to.By the time i was 12 months my eyes were a deep copper colour. So it depends on the breed and the parentage. My parents have the same colour eyes.
