help with hungry cat

My cat is always hungry and always wants to be fed. When he was younger he used to wake me up 3 times a night to be fed. If I wouldn't feed him, he'd "break into" the kitchen cabinet where his food was kept and eat to his heart's content. I say "break in" because I would block off the cabinet door with boxes.
Now he meows constantly around his meal times. He is very overweight, but he won't stop meowing (very loudly) until he is fed. I usually end up feeding him because my roommates can't stand the noise, and frankly neither can I. If I don't feed him right away, he gets angry and will go to the litterbox and poop. Then he knocks things off of tables and shelves.

I don't know what to do. I don't want him to be diabetic, but I don't know how else to make him quiet. I want his feeding time to be enjoyable, not a stressful event.

It's difficult for me to believe that your cat, just to get back at you, would actually go to his litter box and poop. Cats live for the moment and I don't think he would do something like this to "show you". Is it possible that he is bored? Diabetes is not something that you can prevent, if he is, he is, and the only way you can tell if he is is to go to the vet and have him tested. He seems to have an extreme need for food, or for attention. Do you play with him? A laser pointer or those cat fishing-pole toys are a lot of fun. If he helps himself to food, you can get a locking plastic container that he can't get into. If he's chewing up the bag of food, a plastic container with a locking lid will keep him out. What does your vet say about his extreme hunger? Any suggestions from them?

Izzie is such a great source of useful information. He gives plenty of great advise! One thing that I can add to what he said is: "What type of food are you feeding?". If you are feeding one of the grocery store foods, that may be your problem. They are sooooo full of fattening fillers and fat, but very low in nutrition. Without the proper nutrients, we all search for enough to keep us in proper balance. When my Meowmie switched to a high quality holistic food, I began to eat less, loose weight, and became much more active! The doc even said, with the weight loss, I have a better chance of not becoming "typeII" diabetic, and I stopped having UTI's. It feels great to be able to properly groom myself again also!
