Freezing wet food?
Hello All,
Xigris has been eating 3oz of Purina Pro Plan for kittens twice a day since late November. Recently I tried giving him Felidae wet (Chicken and Rice) - I mixed 1 tablespoon of Felidae into his normal 3oz of PPP. About 20 min. after eating, he had 2 bouts of runny stools which continued for 2 days after I stopped the Felidae (stopped the PPP for 24 hrs as well).
It's a week later and he's back to normal stools. I wanted to try the switch again but perhaps at 1 teaspoon per feeding. However I only have the 6oz cans(48 of them :( !! ) which will only last 3 days refrigerated. Has anyone ever kept canned leftovers in the freezer? Any ideas on how much longer the food can be kept this way? I just want Xigris to have healthier food but I don't want to make him miserable!
Thanks in advance.
BTW he's eating Felidae dry too (fed free choice) and has no problems with that.

I adopted an older stray girl who ended up developing CRF (chronic renal failure). She needed a special diet, some home-made, mixed with prescription canned food. To make things easier, as lots of preparation was involved, I'd make up a batch & freeze it into smaller portions for later.
While I'm not crazy about using plastics, preferring to use glass, I used plastic here since it wasn't frozen long. If you buy Glad Press & Seal freezer wrap, you can lay out one sheet on your counter, putting spoonsful of canned food on the sheet like you would with cookies for baking. Then, place another sheet on top & firmly press around each small scoopful.
Each serving is now sealed separately. Lay the sheet flat in the freezer till frozen. You can cut off one at a time with scissors whenever you need a serving. Or after well-frozen, cut into separate servings & put it all into a larger labelled freezer bag.
Frozen like this, it'll last at least one month well. Good luck with Xigris' food!!

Open cans of cat food should not be frozen and served later. I know it is hard to throw the leftovers away, but for the sake of your kitty's tummy, you shouldn't be serving him any leftovers that are more than 1 day old! 3 days is too long. You would not eat meat leftover for 3 days (I hope you wouldn't!), so your kitty can't either.
I'm wondering why you're giving him Felidae. I volunteer at the ASPCA in NYC, and we give our kittens Iams wet and dry (kitten formulas). I have raised all my cats on Iams from birth. They are all happy, healthy, and long-lived. Also, I stopped giving wet food when they were 6 months old. They preferred the dry. Just make sure you give lots of fresh clean water!
Xigris may be reacting to all the trauma from his injuries and surgeries also. The combo of the food changes plus any meds he is on may be making him a little irregular. Giving him the food that keeps his tummy happy till he's all better may be just what he needs.

It depends on the cat. Does you cat like wet food when it's frozen? It'll be good to give him his regular canned food(ProPlan)& a tablespoon oh his new food. Then keep inceasing the amount of new food with the old food & least old food untill he eats only the new food.If I were you I would microwave just a little about 15 seconds the food when you get it out of the freezer unless you get it out of the freezer hours before feeding it becouse It will be frozen by the time you get it out of the freezer.
Any ideas on how much longer the food can be kept this way? Maybe, five days.
