Does anyone have any tips on flying with a cat?

I am moving from San Francisco, CA to Madison, WI, and I am going to fly with my 5-year-old cat. I think I have the policies figured out, but I was looking for tips on how to make the trip comfortable for the kitty, i.e. going to the bathroom, feeding, watering, etc. Because Madison is a bit out of the way, I have to make weird connections, and the total flight time + changing planes is about 8 hours. This seems like a long time for her. I saw this portable litter box online. Has anyone used it? Thanks.
