croaky sounding purr....?

my cat has started making a strange croaky sound when she purrs. it does not seem to bother her. she is also deaf and has always had a loud meow. she seems to do it more when she is asking for food rather than just relaxing. i am also reluctant to take her to th vet unless it is nessecary as she is an indoor cat and is scared when she sees a car out the window, let alone get in the back of one.

cheers

dom

Hi, Dom. Sorry, but here, we always suggest a trip to the vet whenever there is a sudden change in behavior. It could be anything from an Upper Respiratory Infection (kitty cold) to a tumor on her esophagus. Only a vet can tell for sure. Cats are stoic and don't show pain so it's hard to tell when they're sick. As for taking her to the vet's, use a carrier. Put her favorite blanket in there. You may even be able to get a mild sedative from the vet to give her before taking her in.

It sounds like an upper respiratory infection. You could try calling a mobile veterinarian who makes house calls. I had one come out and give a stray cat his rabies vaccine and cut his nails. The cat was not stressed and I think it worked out better for me as well. Hope kitty is okay.
