When a cat doesn't use the litter box to defecate, I immediately wonder if she's not experiencing some health issue, such as impacted glands near her anus. This is like a hemmorhoid, and if it hurts her to defecate in the box, she thinks the box is causing it. Some people can empty their cat's glands themselves, but if you don't know how to do it, you could wind up scratched and bitten, especially if theyre painful. Your best bet is to take your kitty to the vet for an exam. Is she scooting on the floor? Impacted glands can also cause itching "back there". You may also want to make sure her box is VERY clean. Use only about 2 inches of litter. Make sure the box is in a private place and she isn't hasseled when she's in there by humans or other animals. Cats feel especially vulnerable when they're in the box and if they're disturbed, they won't use it. You might even want to try putting another box out for her to use in addition to the one she has.
