Castration with rubber band on cat? Safe? Illegal in Oklahoma?
A relative in a different state (Oklahoma) wants to save money by castrating her 2 boy kittens using a rubber band. She says she did it before to another cat, there was no problem & the cat displayed no discomfort. I was horrified. How could she know if he had no discomfort? Isn't this dangerous?! And isn't this illegal? Help!!!

OMG-WHAT! That is HORRIFIC AND ABUSIVE!!! If you wrap something up tight and let it die off....how is that not going to cause pain, let alone the mental troubles a cat would feel, I'm sure, because they would be fearful of the owner. This has to be a joke. What about low cost neuters??? Why does she have cats if she cannot afford to properly care for them??? Please do the right thing and do NOT let her do this and call authorities. I can't imagine someone purposefully inflicting something like that on a little animal so they can save a little money. Then don't own pets!!!

Yes, it is extremely dangerous and highly likely to prove FATAL by causing an infected wound to the poor cat's testicles. It is cruel and illegal! Tell your relative to find a low cost neutering clinic and get the op done by a vet - it doesn't involve removing the cat's scrotum, which is what your relative would be doing if she tried to do that with an elastic band and it's a four minute procedure for a vet to do - WITH ANAESTHETIC.
I don't believe that the relative did this to a cat before without the cat coming to serious harm. It would hurt, cause great distress and a terrible injury to the cat.

You should never ever do that yourself and tell your relative that what she is doing is animal abuse. We know her intention is to save money but this she's using a wrong method. There are other methods to save money such as asking local pet shelters to sponsor the surgery. Castration with a rubber band is HORRIFYING.
The previous cat is lucky enough not to have an infection but there is certainly a high risk of getting the cat killed by infection or poisoning by dead tissues. Yah...
Castration and other surgery-liked procedures should be done by certified Vets and in reputable clinics.

inhumane, cruel, and just wrong. Of course it hurts. Would your brother like having a rubber band cutting off blood to his kiwi fruit so they shrivel and die? Have your aunt get a low cost neuter certificate from Friends of Animals.org- this poor cat.. please do what you can to intervene... the possibility for infection is monstrous... awful.
