Can't we all just get along?

My husband and I are both cat people. My husband had 3 female cats-2 had got along really well & the 3rd was a kitten that created some problems. Those other 2 cats started hiding under the bed, urinating on the floor, etc. We gave the worst off of the 2 back to a previous owner. I had 2 cats who have been together since birth and get along fine - a male & female. When we merged "families" (his 2 cats and my 2 cats), this created some issues. My male cat has become very aggressive towards his 2 cats, and the 1 very skittish female cat of his is now doing really poorly. Does anyone have any tips on how I can get them to coexist? The male cat constantly beats up on the skittish female, and she will no longer come out of the bedroom (and rightfully so!). I'm worried about her. Any suggestions on how to change the behavior and then re-socialize them?

Thanks, All.
