Can't get rid of giardia! Help!
I rescued a stray who is healthy otherwise but has been on three rounds of meds for giardia (2 mls Panacur/day for one week (didn't work), Metronidazole (didn't work) and is now back on 2 mls./day of Panacur for two weeks. He still has diarrhea. My vet said she had a cat that had it for TWO YEARS! I can't keep him in quarantine much longer, he is bored silly. Any suggestions?

Niether of my kitties has had giardia but I work in the animal field with birds, amphibians, and reptiles and some of them have contracted giardia. We used Panacur for five days straight and then if that didn't work we'd switch to Metronidazole. Cats and dogs sometimes have more drug resistant strains of giardia though. The key is to disinfect the litterbox (since the organism is excreted in feces) and the room the cat is held in or else he is just going to be reinfecting himself the whole time. Also, try and scoop the poop from the litterbox more frequently. We use 1:10 dilution of bleach for disinfecting at work. It can take a while since giardia cysts can live for several months.
