Hi folks, new to the site! I have two female kittens, thirteen weeks, named Orion and Cleo (formally Oreo). Basically my question is at what age do the meows generally calm down? I'm making their spaying appointment later this evening, but this is getting urgent, as these meows are illegal immigrants in my home (technically, i'm not allowed to have kittens, but who can resist 4 week old kittens abandoned by the momma). I've purchased about a milllion different toys to occupy them, but they seem to be more excited about knocking each other off the back of the couch or galloping like horses. They also knock each other around into EVERYTHING, and I'm worried they'll get hurt. They're beautiful kittens, and I am quite attached to them, but their craziness at 5 am is starting to get to me. They only seem to get rowdy for an hour before bed (regardless of the time or if they were sleeping, it's when i decide to sleep) and from 5:30 to 6:30. Any tips you folks have for me would be helpful!

Welcome! This is a question we read a lot on our site, and not everyone is as gracious about the kitten krazees are you seem to be! The basic truth is that kittens are like little kids, except most kids don't play destructo around the house all night. Since your babies were abandoned by Mama, they have the added disadvantage of not being around her long enough to learn what's acceptable and what's not. Now, it's YOUR responsibility 8-) Playtime with you can tire them out as well as teach them. However, you can't discipline the kitten krazees out of them. All you can do is kitten proof your home. Put away valuable chachkees, houseplants, etc. for a while. My cats don't play with their toys (with the exception of Izzie who LOVES a giant marble I found in my craft box)unless I play with them, but they love cardboard boxes, paper bags, etc. and these things are all safe toys. Channel their energy into playing with you. At this age they can even be taught to play "fetch" with small balls!
