6 week old kitten wont eat...

my friend found abandoned kittens, they were 4 weeks when she found them, we took them in and now they are 6 weeks...one is considerable bigger than the other and very healthy and active...the other is very thin but still active, we believe she was the runt. the smaller one has been refusing to eat anything but friskies pate style foods..when we 1st got them my friend was feeding them kroger brand (horrible) when they got here we started them on kitten chow and they were eating it...my hubby had discovered that we still had a can of friskies from our old cat and gave it to the kittens, they went wild over it..they started refusing ALL dry foods...the vet recommended we get a good quality wet and dry food, we went and got orijen dry and wellness wet kitten foods. well...they sniff and sniff at the orijen but wont eat it...the vet said let it sit for a few days, when they find they arent getting anything else they will eat the healthy food..sounds right to me but though i would ask.

You seem to have changed foods on these kittens quite frequently. You should be feeding them a good quality kitten wet food mixed with KMR, or kitten milk replacer. They should not be eating adult cat food because it is too strong for them and doesn't have what they need at their age. The food should be mixed to a wet slurry and fed to them in a small bowl. For the one who won't eat, she should be fed off a spoon. If she continues not to eat, you may need to ask your vet if you should force feed her or let her keep eating the pate style since at least it's something that she will eat. You will need to be taught how to force feed if that's what the vet recommends. You should not let wet food "sit for a few days" as it needs to be refrigerated or it will go bad and the babies should not eat it then as it will make them sick. Whatever you do, get a good quality kitten food and don't switch them again. Don't feed them "old" food. Keep to one kind of kitten food and mix it with the KMR.

The former poster is right! Stop switching foods so frequently! I have fostered kittens as young as four (4) weeks old and they need to be fed frequently (every few hours) and they need kitten replacement formula as well. Wellness kitten food is a good choice. I believe Wellness may have a dry food formula for kittens also. I feed my adult cat Wellness canned food and Wellness Core (dry food), but stick to kitten foods until they are one (1) year old. If any kitten refuses to eat, take him/her to the vet ASAP. Kittens get dehydrated very quickly and can die. Best of luck with the little babies.

The two posters above me are right on the wet food, the kittens will get confused since you are constantly switching food on them. You need to ease in the new food. Since they are 6 weeks old, they shouldn't be eating any KMR, that's what my vet told me, since they are more active they need more protein filled food. Another thing, your smaller kitten, try to see if she will eat more when the bigger one is not around, sometimes a runt stays a runt because s/he is being forced out of the food or being pushed aside. Normally dry food isnt' good for kittens anyway because it's harder for them to eat and it grows bacteria when you mix it with water.

But try to have them eat the friskies you were giving them and slowly mix in the other food. This time around try to slowly intergrate new foods don't shock them by giving them new food all of the time.
