National Feral Cat Awareness Month: Understanding and Helping Community Cats

October 16th has been recognized as National Feral Cat Awareness Day since its creation by Alley Cat Allies in 2001. Here at Catster, we believe it takes more than just one day to make a difference, and that’s why we’re joining Mission: Meow in campaigning to make October National Feral Cat Awareness Month: a time to learn more about feral and community cats and the challenges they face.

These cats may live outdoors and have limited contact with people, but they are still an important part of many communities and deserve care and compassion.

Feral cats are unsocialized domestic cats who typically avoid close human interaction. Some were born outdoors, while others may have become feral after living without regular human contact. Community cats can also include friendly strays and other free-roaming felines who rely on outdoor resources.

One of the most widely used approaches for managing feral cat populations is trap-neuter-return (TNR). Through TNR programs, cats are humanely trapped, spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and returned to their outdoor homes. This can help prevent litters while allowing cats who aren’t comfortable living indoors to remain in familiar surroundings. Through surgical sterilization, TNR reduces feral cat numbers without culling or disrupting cat colonies.

National Feral Cat Awareness Month is also an opportunity to learn how to safely interact with community cats, support local TNR efforts, and recognize when a cat may need additional help.

Catster has compiled its resources on feral cats, TNR, community cat care, and related topics to make it easier to find reliable information and learn more about helping cats living outdoors.
