It is with a broken heart that I report that Mango, the cat who was set afire, has gone to the Rainbow Bridge. Here is the first-purrson account from one of her doctors, Dr Patti:

I couldnt be more sad to report that our little Mango crossed over the Rainbow Bridge yesterday. I know she had not been in the Guardian Angel program for very long but she had won the hearts of everyone she had touched.

We had been caring for Mango for only a couple of weeks. Each day we anesthetized her for her bandage change, making sure that we showed great care in keeping her wound sterile. Unfortunately a couple of days ago Mango had a complication with her anesthesia, which always carries a small risk. Her breathing became labored despite IV fluids, antibiotics, supplemental oxygen and a blood transfusion. She began to suffer and we saw the light go out of her eyes. As much as we all wanted Mango to live we knew that we had to do what was best for her and not let her suffer. She was surrounded by the team that had been caring for her and couldnt have been loved more as she passed. It was difficult for us to make the decision to euthanize Mango, as we had all come to love her fierce will to live and her gentle spirit despite all that had happened to her.

It is easy in a situation like this to become bitter and angry. It simply is not fair. I am sure some psychologist out there would say that this is even healthy to allow those feelings to dominate us for a while. However, I think we as animal lovers and supporters need to rise above our anger. Looking back we got to know and love an absolutely wonderful cat. A cat that showed everyone what living is all about. She did not hold a grudge nor did she shy away from people. She handled her hurt and fear bravely. She forgave.

One person chose to be cruel, inhuman and cowardly by committing the act of deliberately setting a cat on fire. Remember though that a group of children saw this happen and bravely acted to help Mango. Dozens of staff from a local shelter and veterinary hospital devoted their time and money to save Mango. Dozens of people here at Best Friends rallied to save her too. And hundreds of guardian angels were instantly on her side. There is a lot more people that are good out there than are bad. Lets try to focus on that. Lets have faith that justice will be served. Lets pick up from here and try and be more like Mango focusing on the positive and not dwelling in anger or the negative.

I am truly sorry that so many of you out there never got to meet Mango, but if there are true kitty angels, I know that Mango is now spreading her wings.
