Ever heard of truffle pigs? These domesticated hogs are used to hunt truffles, a type of tuber commonly found in European and North American forests, which has been called “the diamond of the culinary world.” Truffle pigs can smell these little delicacies when they’re as deep as three feet under ground.
My cat Phoenix is like a truffle pig, except for plastic bags. If there’s plastic in the house, she’ll find it — and then she’ll proceed to lick it until I take it away. Phoenix is not alone. The feline species’ fascination with plastic bags has been well-documented, with occasionally hilarious results.
1. First-rate freakout
When a plastic bag is introduced to this cat’s environment, she has to check it out — but you know what they say about cats and curiosity. There is no freakout quite like a feline freakout!
2. Surprise, surprise, kitty surprise!
When this cat jumps up to inspect a seemingly harmless plastic bag on the couch, he is shocked to learn someone else has already discovered this treasure.
3. Cats wearing capes
This amazing video compilation demonstrates that cats have no trouble getting into plastic bags — but getting out is a problem for pretty much everyone. The good news: Those plastic bags kind of look like tiny superhero capes. Don’t try to squeeze out the handle, my friends! Go out the way you came in!
4. Ninja cat in a bag
Okay, so this cat is in a paper bag instead of plastic — but this furry little stealth master’s admirable patience and intimidation tactics are too adorable not to share.
5. Take it from Maru: Bags are the best
Maru the cat’s intense love of boxes spawned the international “if it fits, I sits” movement, but it turns out this chubby Japanese kitty also loves bags — especially when they fit snugly over his striped, round head.
