Nail trimming is an essential part of cat ownership to keep your kitty’s nails in tip-top shape while also protecting your furniture and yourself from unnecessary scratches. But not all nail trimmers on the market are created equal. Enter the Zen Clippers.

The Zen Clipper by Pet Product Innovations, LLC is a pet nail trimmer available in sizes suitable for most domestic pets. The manufacturer is based in Des Plaines, Illinois, and ships directly to U.S. consumers from their warehouse. For consumers outside of the U.S., the company’s products can be bought through online retailers like Chewy and Amazon.

What sets these trimmers apart from others is their unique conical blade designed to protect your cat’s quick. The quick is the pink part of a cat’s nail containing the nerves and blood vessels. They’re very sensitive and can bleed a lot if clipped during nail trims, so the Zen Clippers’ quick-bypassing design is a godsend for cat owners terrified of cutting the quick.

These clippers come in several sizes, so finding the perfect fit for your kitty is as easy as using the manufacturer’s helpful sizing guide. We highly recommend using the sizing guide, as you have to physically insert your cat’s nails into the trimmer to clip them. The nail will not fit properly into an improperly sized clipper.

Read on to learn more about the Zen Clippers to determine if they’re the right trimmer for your cat.

Our Zen Clipper Cat Nail Trimmer Review

Sharp (But Safe!) Blade

The blade on the Zen Clipper is extremely sharp. It isn’t meant to crush the nail, like many other clippers on the market, but instead, shear silently right through it as if it were butter. This is a godsend for anxious cats, as the crunching sound that happens when you clip their nails using poor-quality clippers can scare them.

Don’t let the sharpness of the blade scare you, though. The Zen Clipper is designed to only clip the very tip of your cat’s nail. The unique conical blade shape slides over your cat’s nail tip, only allowing a predetermined amount of nail to enter the clipper, making it virtually impossible for you to cut the quick accidentally. The manufacturer believes so wholeheartedly in this feature that their tagline for this product is “Clips the Tip and Not the Quick.” There’s even a YouTube video of a pet owner using the Zen Clippers with a blindfold on—that’s how safe they are!

Ergonomic Handle

While a nail clipper’s most important feature is, without a doubt, how well they clip your cat’s nails, we cannot overlook the ergonomics because your comfort is important, too. If you’ve ever tried using awkward, dollar-store nail trimmers, you know exactly what we mean.

The Zen Clippers have a cushioned and non-slip handle that’s designed for right and left-handed users. They don’t feel awkward to hold and can give you the confidence you need to handle this often scary task with ease. Remember, studies show your cat can pick up on your anxiety, so if you feel confident with your clippers, they’ll be more likely to relax during the process.

A Size for Most Pets

The Zen Clippers are available in seven sizes, making it easy for pet owners to get the right size clippers for their pets. They recommend sizes Small or Extra Small for adult cats and Extra Extra Small for kittens. Be sure to check out the company’s size guide if you have other pets in the home for which you’d like to buy a pair of clippers. They have sizes up to Extra Extra Large for dogs between 30 and 60 pounds. Check out their handy sizing chart to find the right size for your pet.

Build Quality Inconsistencies

Our main complaint about these clippers is that there appears to be some build quality consistencies. The center spring isn’t always secure and sometimes pops out, rendering the clippers useless. Thankfully, the company does have a great return policy, which makes it easy for folks receiving defective clippers to return them for better-quality ones.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I find the Zen Clippers?

Zen Clippers can be found in several online retailers. Pet Product Innovation LLC is the manufacturer, and they sell the clippers on their website. Or, Amazon also sells them for an affordable price, and they’re also available on Chewy.com.

How do I know what size to get?

The Zen Clippers are available in numerous sizes, so it’s important to get the right size for your pet. Their “Small” size has a 2.5 mm hole and is designed for use on birds, cats, puppies, reptiles, and other small animals. Their “Extra Small” size has a 2 mm hole and is meant for small cats, birds, reptiles, and small animals. The “Extra Extra Small” size hole is just 1.5 mm. These clippers are designed for kittens, so if your cats are older, you’ll want to go with the Small or Extra Small size.

Check out their handy sizing chart to find the right size for your pet.

Zen Clipper

How are the Zen Clippers different from other nail trimmers?

Zen Clippers have a unique conical design that only allows a predetermined amount of nail to be trimmed. There are no sharp edges to prevent accidental injuries, and the two blades meet in the middle to shear the nail by evenly applying pressure to all sides. Other nail trimmers on the market have an open-ended design and rely on the user to ensure they’re not accidentally cutting their cat’s quick.

What the Users Say

As we’ve already mentioned, consumers love the Zen Clippers for their comfort, sharp blade, and ease of use. While these clippers work quite well for most cat owners, some people may wish to go with another model.

As some users mention, it can take several tries to get your pet’s nail into the clipper’s hole, especially if you have poor close-up vision. Think of it as threading a sewing needle—if your eyes permit you to do so with ease, you’ll probably be okay with the Zen Clippers.

Another commonly brought-up concern was the importance of finding the right size. You must buy the right size clippers for your cat, as the incorrect size will make it impossible for you to get the job done right. Thankfully, the company understands this and has a great return policy. Some cats may have nails of differing thicknesses, which can make it impossible to trim them with just one pair of clippers. In this case, we recommend the company’s other product, the Zen Clipper Precise.

Conclusion

The Zen Clippers are a great trimming tool for cat owners thanks to their safe design, sharp blade, ergonomics, and ease of use. They make quick and painless work of clipping your cat’s nails, but the caveat is that you need to find the right size for them to work as expected. The company has three sizes they recommend for cats and a helpful sizing chart to help guide you, but getting the right clipper for your pet’s nails can still be challenging, especially if your pet has nails of varying thicknesses. In multi-cat households, you might even need multiple clippers to get the job done.
