We give Litter-Robot 3 litter box a rating of 4.6 out of 5 stars overall.

Build Quality: 4.8/5
Features: 4.5/5
Price: 4.0/5
Value: 4.5/5

The Litter-Robot 3 is a dream come true for cat owners. This premier litter box comes with a self-cleaning function, ensuring that you never have to worry about scooping cat waste again.

It also has a large and airy build to enhance your cat’s comfort. Additionally, the Litter-Robot 3 comes with innovative features for both your and your cat’s convenience. These include a carbon filter for eliminating smells, an automatic night light, and sleep mode.

When you throw in an extra $50, you get the Litter-Robot 3 with Open Air Connect. This version can connect to your home Wi-Fi, enabling you to monitor the box remotely using your smartphone.

With the Litter-Robot 3, all you need to do for litter management is take out the waste bag from the machine’s waste drawer every few days. Therefore, even with its relatively high price tag, the convenience that the Litter-Robot 3 offers is worth every penny.

Since you do not have to empty the litter every day, it saves you time, as well as money in the long term because you also won’t have to buy new litter as often. Furthermore, you will no longer have to deal with unpleasant smells.

Here is a comprehensive review of this automatic litter box.

What Is Litter-Robot 3? How Does It Work?

The Litter-Robot 3 is a litter box that cleans itself automatically. Once the cat is done doing their business in the box, the Litter-Robot 3’s automatic sifting system begins to rotate to separate waste from clean litter, saving you from having to scoop.

This appliance comes with a cat sensor, which is a weight-sensitive switch that can detect when your kitty enters and exits the box. For the sensor to detect the cat, the kitty must weigh at least 5 pounds.

Once the cat exits the box, the system initiates a timer that counts down the set time for litter clumping. You can set the countdown timer to 3, 7, or 15 minutes, depending on the average time it takes for your cat’s litter to clump.

When the set time is over, the system launches the cleaning cycle automatically. The globe inside the litter box will start rotating slowly, resulting in the clumps falling into the waste chamber below, with the unused litter remaining in the box.

The entire process is so efficient that the Litter-Robot 3 has been shown to use up to 50% less litter than standard litter boxes. This essentially means that this automatic litter box can cut your litter budget by half.

The Litter-Robot 3 is equipped with several drawers for waste storage. Once a drawer is full, a blue light will flash, indicating that it needs emptying. If you get the Litter-Robot 3 with Open Air Connect, you can check drawer levels in real time from your phone.

Litter-Robot 3 Features

The following are some of the features that make the Litter-Robot 3 one of the best litter box systems today.

Carbon Filter

We do not need to tell you how foul the smell of cat waste is. We also do not need to remind you how bad of a job standard litter boxes do at containing that odor.

The Litter-Robot 3 comes with a carbon filter that makes the box odor-proof. It is so effective that the only way to know whether there is waste in the drawer is by checking.

This feature makes the Litter-Robot 3 a good choice for smaller apartments where even slight odors can quickly become overwhelming. In addition to the filter, the drawers are fully enclosed to prevent odors from leaking out

Night Light

Cats are renowned for their night vision. Nature has equipped their eyes with numerous rod cells that trap every photon of light in their surroundings to enhance their vision in the dark. This is the reason their pupils dilate in low-light settings.

Nonetheless, they are not immune to the effects of aging. One of those effects is the deterioration of their night vision. To cater to the needs of cats with poor night vision, the Litter-Robot 3 comes with an automatic night light feature that lights up the litter box once it detects the cat’s presence.

If your cat has great vision, meaning that they do not need the night light feature, you can turn it off at the control panel.

Semi-Automatic Mode

This machine’s automatic weight sensor has a minimum weight threshold of 5 pounds. This means that cats that weigh less might not be detected, resulting in the cleaning cycle not being initiated.

However, there is a way around that issue, and it involves using the semi-automatic mode. When you select this mode, you will start the cleaning cycle manually once the cat is done using the box and then turn it off once the cycle is complete.

This ensures that even kittens can use the Litter-Robot 3

Safety Lock

You are likely going to place the Litter-Robot 3 on the floor. However, that makes it accessible to kids, who might play around with the buttons and change some settings accidentally.

Fortunately, there is a remedy for that: a safety lock. To activate the safety lock, go to the control panel and turn on the lockout feature. You can do this on the app if you have the Connect version.

Once active, the buttons will not execute any command when pressed. The good news is that the safety lock does not compromise anything, as the machine will continue operating automatically.

Is Litter-Robot 3 a Good Value?

The Litter-Robot 3 is a worthwhile investment for those looking to make life with their cats more stress free. This automatic litter box really does make litter management a lot easier: It cleans up the litter for you, puts the waste into a bag, and does an excellent job at containing odors. This means that all you have to do is simply empty the drawers every couple of days.

Therefore, even though it might be costly, the convenience that the Litter-Robot 3 offers is worth it. Moreover, it uses a lot less litter than standard boxes do, meaning that you will save on litter expenses. In the long run, the Litter-Robot 3 will prove to be cheaper than run-of-the-mill litter boxes in terms of maintenance.

How Often Should You Empty the Litter-Robot 3?

This will depend on the number of cats using the box. According to most owners, the Litter-Robot 3 can hold 2 weeks of waste from a single cat. The rule of thumb, however, is to empty it when the drawers are full.

Yes, it can. However, only if you go for a long time without cleaning the unit. Therefore, clean it at least once a week.

What the Users Say

From what we gathered, the majority of Litter-Robot 3 owners are glad they got this unit. This is especially true for those who live with disabilities and aren’t able to perform routine litter tasks.

Conclusion

Even though cats have excellent bathroom habits, you will still have to handle their litter. As many pet parents can attest, scooping, cleaning, and replacing litter boxes is not a glamorous job, especially if you have to do it regularly.

If you could use all the help you can get, consider getting the Litter-Robot 3. It will do all the litter management for you. Your only job will be to empty the waste drawers about once a week.

  1. Hi there, My Litter-Robot 3 does not empty on its own and when I press the empty button in goes clockwise and dumps all the litter in the bottom drawer. If I unplug it, it will go counter clockwise and empty the dirty litter in the bottom drawer. What is wrong with my Litter-Robot 3?

    1. Hi Sherwood, that certainly sounds frustrating! I recommend you contact Litter Robot here https://www.litter-robot.com/support/ so they can assist you further. Hope that helps!
