My fab kitty glitter ring from Locketship

I've been writing about cat culture and style for nearly three years, so when it comes to cat anything, it takes a lot to capture my attention. These do. These five rings are unusual. Some are overt, while others are subtle. Regardless of whether they fit your individual style, you can appreciate them as being stylish, humorous, or both.

1. Cat Poison Ring

This fat cat hides a surprise inside in the form of a tiny silver mouse! The secretive accessory is from Xindi, who says it's "probably the coolest cat ring in the history of this or any other universe," and I can't say I disagree.

In addition to being crafted out of sterling silver, this posh pussy also sports a pair of diamond eyes. It's perfect for charming friends or easily disposing of your enemies (just kidding -- please don't poison anyone with it!).

2. Magical Black Moon Cat Ring

Real Harry Potter talk: If I had a patronus, it would be a black cat. I think they are extraordinary creatures and have always been drawn to them. I have a black kitty named Charlie and a tuxedo cat named Priscilla. I love them both very much, and they've always brought me happiness and luck.

So it goes without saying that I was instantly enamored with this brass-and-enamel black cat ring from Galibardy. The stunning statement piece, inspired by a witch's cat (and also maybe Luna from Sailor Moon?), features gorgeous golden details and a mystical moon on its forehead -- great for when you need a little help warding off bad spirits or staying in the good graces of feline's fashion elite.

3. Kitty Litter Box Ring

Gross? Amazing? Amazingly gross? It's hard to put into words exactly what I felt the first time I laid eyes on this kitty-crap-inspired creation by Super Shy Girl. To be clear, I love it ... but would I actually wear it? That's another question entirely.

Each ring set is made to order out of polymer clay and plastic, and just like in real life, the seller warns that each kitty, litter box, and poop is unique, so they may vary slightly from the picture.

If displaying a litter box on your hand is just too much to bear (I would at least take it off during mealtimes), the designer also makes a slightly less startling version of a cat eating out of a bowl, which may be more suitable for those of us with more delicate sensibilities.

4. Animal Ring-stincts in Cat

As much as I love black kitties, I also have an affinity for white cats, especially when they're in irresistible ring form. And a pink heart-shaped nose never hurt anyone!

This Vivi Dot ring is cute as a button, but it took a lot of work to get this adorable accessory just right. First, they design their own fabric to cover the buttons (no shortcuts here), and then add laser cut felt ears to ensure maximum squee-ability. 

5. Kitty Fish Ring

There's something just perfect about this delicate kitty-nomming-fish creation that speaks to my inner cat lady. Perhaps it's the face of a kitty knowing he's completed a job well done.

The handmade SuEnvy piece is made out of mat sterling silver and white diamonds, so it's a little pricier than your average cat costume jewelry, but it will last longer (and hopefully not turn your finger green). Wear it as a testament to your love for all things cat or as a reminder that, like good fishies, good things come to those who wait.

I recently featured a DIY cat nail decal project that requires little more than a printer and some special paper, but if you don't have time to do it yourself, there's also an emerging market of ready made decals, press-ons, and other fun accessories to give your claws that extra kitty pop.

These adorable alternatives to acrylics are reusable and soak off in hot water. They were created by a professional nail tech in Japan (the world capital of cuteness), who makes tons of adorbz designs and also takes custom orders.

What's better than awesome cat nail decals? How about prettying your paws and helping homeless kitties at the same time? I Heart Nail Art recently teamed up with City Kitties to create nail art for a good cause.

The cats pictured on this charitable set are actual cats and kittens who are up for adoption or have been successfully adopted from City Kitties, a nonprofit, no-kill cat rescue dedicated to saving and improving the lives of stray cats in the West Philadelphia area. In addition to making a feline fashion statement, $5 from every decal set will be donated to the rescue and goes directly to caring for and saving cats in need.

These fancy fingers right here belong to none other than yours truly, after I gave some JanChristie cat nail decals a try. After applying a pale pink base coat, each thin decal was applied like a sticker, with a little help from a tweezer to put them in place.

I opted to go with a multitude of felines for a crazy cat lady look, but you can order any color or breed you'd like or even go for a custom print of your own cat. The decals last for a few days and can be extended by adding a generous clear top coat.

I wasn't sure about the dress on its own, but I love ModStylists' suggestion to soften the look by adding a fitted denim jacket, simple necklace, wedge sandals, and an oversized purse. It all adds up to give the dress a more youthful silhouette, suited to the modern cat lady on the go.

As a bona fide Hello Kitty fanatic who endured food poisoning for a chance to travel to the Hello Kitty theme park in Tokyo, I'm crazy for this adorable kitty dress designed in collaboration with JapanLA.

I think it's telling that after I got my phone a few years ago, my first priority was finding the perfect cat-themed case to show my kitty love. I settled on a black case with a funky cat lady design. Now there's a huge variety of colorful and cat-shaped cases, which will keep your phone feeling safe and looking stylish at the same time.

Exelby's work initially stood out to me because of its use of bright colors and wild prints, but it was her wide-eyed, tiny-tooth exposing kitty that ultimately won me over. Stuck on a boring call or just need a smile to lighten the day? One look at this fierce feline's silly expression and you'll instantly be in a better mood.

If you weren't one of the lucky ones who got to meet her on her recent trip to South by Southwest, get grumpy for yourself at her official Zazzle shop, which is chock-full of her signature frown. What better way to warn those around you to stay outta your way before you've had your daily dose of caffeine?

2. Lil Bub

If we're talking true Internet superstars, we can't leave Lil Bub out of the conversation. The adorable permakitten is a toothless dwarf with extra toes and bulging eyes, all of which combine to make her quite possibly the cutest cat on the planet.

In addition to her millions of friends and fans across various social media platforms, this little cat has raised thousands of dollars for animal-related charities, has the documentary Lil Bub & Friendz debuting this month at the Tribeca Film Festival in NYC, and is preparing for the release of her first book in September.

Classic Unisex Bub T

Bub's dude, Mike Bridavsky, has stated that he only works with his friends when creating Bub products, proceeds of which go to animal organizations like Pets Alive, the Exotic Feline Rescue Center, and Monroe County Humane Association. In my opinion, the Bub shop has the coolest items around, including rad tees, totes, stickers, posters, and more, all featuring her precious, out-of-this-world mug.

3. Henri, le Chat Noir

Henri, le Chat Noir, the philosophical French feline from Seattle, whose existential musings launched millions of YouTube hits, is no slouch himself. In addition to winning the Golden Kitty award at last year's first ever Internet cat video film festival (Roger Ebert called his work, “The best Internet cat video ever made"), Henri is also a Friskies spokescat, author (his upcoming book of angst will be released on April 30), and the voice of a generation of cats suffering from malaise.

Fittingly, his shop is filled with shirts, mugs, laptop skins, and posters covered with his black-and-white fluffy face and signature sayings, such as, "My thumbs are not opposable, yet I oppose everything" and "I am surrounded by morons." It might be hard to believe, but Henri has a soft side, too. His filmmaker, Will Braden, promises that a portion of proceeds from Henri's shop are given to worthy animal welfare organizations.

4. Oskar the Blind Cat and Klaus

Oskar first made international headlines in 2011 when a video of the blind kitten playing with his toys became an instant online hit. Since then, Oskar, who has grown into a happy and healthy cat, and has amassed more than 113,000 fans on his popular Facebook page and won the grand prize at the Friskies cat video awards in November.

Simon's Cat might not be an actual living, breathing feline (although he was based on creator Simon Tofield's kitty, Hugh), but that hasn't stopped the animated cat from capturing the hearts and minds of cat lovers from around the globe with his hilarious shenanigans. In addition to his popular YouTube videos, the naughty white puss is also the subject of three books, the most recent of which, Simon's Cat in Kitten Chaos, was released in the U.S. this week.

While cats are carnivores, there is no reason that what they eat and use can’t be mindful of the planet and other animals at the same time.

Here are five of my favorite organic or natural items for cats. I'll note upfront that I was not paid nor asked to promote any brands or companies; my cats and I just happen to like these items.

1. ORGANIX Adult Cat Food by Castor & Pollux

I have been feeding my cats a strictly organic diet for more than a decade, and this is our favorite. The ingredient list contains nothing I do not recognize and is full of foods that I would eat myself (minus the meat, of course).

On the rare occasions I run out, my cats are NOT happy. They adore this food and never seem to get sick of it. Their fur coats are gloriously glossy, their eyes are clear, and their bowel movements (maybe TMI, but it is important to their health!) are always firm. 

This food isn't cheap (averaging $45 for a 14.5-pound bag), but I recommend it to anyone who can afford it.

2. Organic Catnip Leaf from West Paw Design

My cats LOVE to eat catnip -- and roll in it, lick it, have it stuffed into their favorite toys, and anything else they can do with catnip. Because of this, I like to be sure that their catnip is USDA-certified organic. 

Other than my own homegrown catnip, which I prepare in the summer, this one just happens to be my favorite, although there are many organic brands out there, and many are wonderful.

Less desirable brands can be downright chunky, with stems and full of what can only be called "catnip dust." West Paw promises: “No stems. No fillers. Always Premium.” Its nip is more like a fine tea -- all leaves. 

3. Organic cat grass

While cats are pretty much meat-only eaters, they do occasionally enjoy chomping on some grass. Any of you with outdoor cats can attest to this, and we indoor cat owners know our cats will chomp our houseplants if you let them! 

Allowing your cats to eat whatever plants they find, especially indoor cats, can be deadly. Enter cat grass! I have been growing it from seed for years for my fur babies! They love it and will beg quite loudly when I am trimming off some shoots for them to enjoy.

Cat grass is super easy to grow year-round. You can grow it outside in the summer and inside the rest of the year. I like that this treat is organic and has a single, vegan ingredient. I have tried many brands of seeds as well as the bulk bins at my local plant nursery. All work the same, and it is really just personal preference.

If you have never grown it before, I would recommend buying just a packet so you can make sure your cat likes it before investing in a large bulk bag. You can even find grow kits where the dirt, seeds, and container are all included. If you think you don't have a green thumb (but trust me, this stuff grows itself), you can buy tubs of pre-grown cat grass, but be aware that many of them are NOT organic.

Bonus for humans: Cat grass is actually just a form of wheatgrass/oats, so if you want to clip some of your growth into your own smoothie, you can!  

4. Whole Life Organics Chicken Cat Treats

The sole ingredient of these treats is certified organic chicken breast. Need I say more? We mainly give the fur babies these treats on special occasions like their birthdays or holidays that we celebrate. I also admit that I use them to bribe them into their cat room when we need to mop the rest of the house!  Have you ever seen seven cats walk single file down a hallway? These treats will make that happen!

Because this product is so pure, it's very rich. Just a few crumbles from one piece is all my cats want to eat at a time, but they enjoy it immensely. Tip: Try soaking a piece in water before giving it to them.

5. earthbath Eye Wipes

My kitty, Mei-Ling, has eye cancer. Because of this, her eyes drain all the time, and that affects her sinuses as well. I have looked and looked for an organic eye wipe for her with no luck so far (leave a comment if you know of a brand, please!). But while these all-natural eye wipes are not organic, they are pet-safe and they contain far fewer ingredients than their conventional counterparts.

Mei-Ling's eye cancer means she weeps all the time.

Mei-ling tolerates me using them fairly well (as you know, no cat really likes to have her face wiped). They have no discernible odor and keep the fur around her muzzle nice and clean. If you have a cat with leaky eyes, I highly suggest these wipes.

Since then, I've made a cat toy out of cat hair, created a felt finger puppet in the likeness of my own kitty, and even had a reader send me a beautiful cat-hair bead necklace that she created using fur from my cat, Priscilla. (And yes, it felt a little weird sending someone I had never met an envelope of cat hair, but the end result was totally worth it.)

Last year, FURminator held a competition amongst cat bloggers from across the country to create a celebrity using excess cat fur. My creation was a blue-haired Katy Perry (er, Katy Purry), and guess what? I won! The grand prize was a $1,000 donation to the animal rescue of my choice, proving once and for all that crafting with cat hair can pay.

I know some people have trouble getting over the idea that cat hair is "gross," but it's clean, doesn't smell, and comes in plentiful supply. I hate finding stray cat hairs in my food as much as the next person, but when it comes to crafting, it's fair game.

If you're not ready to get your paws mixed up in your cat's excess fluff, there are quite a few Etsy artists who are happy to do the heavy lifting and create the cat hair project of your dreams. Whether you're commissioning a custom piece or are content with using the cat hair of another, these five unique items are sure to give you fur-ball fever.

1. Felted Kitty Finger Puppet

This adorable, embellished finger puppet was made using a tutorial from "Crafting with Cat Hair: Cute Handicrafts to Make with Your Cat," by Japanese artist Kaori Tsutaya. The process for making your own keepsake puppet isn't particularly difficult, but can prove to be time consuming, as I learned when trying the project out for myself.

Simplify the process by picking up a perfectly sculpted, pre-made cat hair puppet from Monika of Felt Like It 222. Sure, it may not be made out of your own cat's fur, but you'll still own a cool conversation starter, along with a piece of Monika's adopted cat, KC.

2. Cat Luv Necklace With Your Cat's Hair

Flora Davis is a talented jewelry maker who gained fame after turning her Ragamuffin cat Gaia's hair into unique, cat hair-inspired accessories. Davis's catty creations include earrings and sculptural necklaces, which are bonafide works of art.

In addition to working with Gaia's fur, Flora is also open to creating commissioned pieces using your cat's own fluff. My favorite design is the Cat Luv necklace, which includes a felted heart made from your cat's hair, enclosed between two squares of wire mesh. You might not always be able to have your kitty by your side, but you can always keep them close to your heart!

3. Cat Hair Catnip Mice

Another fun, easy, and weird use for cat hair is to make cat toys out of it. Since it can be molded, it's easy to roll into little logs or balls, which cats love to toss around. But why stick to simple shapes when you can go all out? The artist behind Nine Live Twine Cat Hair Creations got creative and fashioned her cat's fuzz it into a traditional cat toy shape, which is sure to drive your kitties wild.

These adorable catnip mice have a felted cat-hair exterior and wool core stuffed with organic catnip and organic catnip spray -- which will definitely help soften the blow once the cats realize that their mousies are really just kitties in disguise.

4. Handknit Ragdoll Cat Hair Bag

I feel like I'm obligated to make some kind of "cat's out of the bag" joke here, but in reality the cat here actually IS the bag. Entwined Spirits creates handknits out of dog and cat hair, including bags like this one, and something called "spirit baskets."

This particular bag was made using the fur of a handsome Vancouver Island Ragdoll kitty named Gabriel. According to the seller, Ragdolls tend to be "affectionate, playful, and easy-going," and it is her hope that owning the bag will also help bring some of those qualities into your life. On an unrelated note, imagine carrying around this furry pouch and having someone ask you where you got it! They'd either end up running for their lives or thinking it was the coolest thing ever. 

5. Meowmorials

As morbid as the name might sound, Meowmorials are actually touching feline tributes, which can be commissioned long before your kitty makes her journey to the great litter box in the sky. These cool little figures can be made to look just like your kitty using his actual hair, and they provide a lasting memento in a way that's much cuter (and less creepy) than taxidermy.

The artist also encourages embellishments like cat whiskers (if you don't have any, she'll add her own), and other long hair accents like mane, paws, and tail. As far as custom kitty items go, this one of the coolest I've ever seen. Here's where I admit that I haven't been brave enough to wear a pair out in public (yet), but if I do decide to dip my paw in the feline cosplay pond, these are the hottest new styles that I'd be excited to try first.

The days of single cat-ear headband options are over. Now, we're free to express our best cat selves through pearls, lace, flowers, and sleekly geometric designs that are equal parts edgy and adorable.

1. Floral Cat Ears

I am obsessed with Locketship, the creative line of colorful, kitty-related accessories by designer Maria Ewing. Her latest collection, Día de los Meowtos, is a celebration of the Mexican holiday Day of the Dead, and features covet-worthy kitty sugar-skull necklaces, rings, and brooches that have all been dipped in a healthy dose of glitter.

The centerpiece of the collection, however, is the delicate cat ear headbands, which come in delicious shades of lavender, mint, and pink. The tiny roses are constructed out of paper and come together to create a gorgeous floral crown that transcends the label of crazy cat lady.

2. Cat Ears Lace Headband

Another popular fabric choice for cat ear headbands is lace, so I'm loving this delicate option from ASOS Collection. The slim band features a woven ribbon trim and sheer-lace ear details, which are decidedly sophisticated.

In addition to cat ears, it appears to be open season on all animals when it comes to these trendy accessories for spring. I've also spotted lace bunny ears and mouse ears, so it's easier than ever before to represent your favorite critter in style. 

3. Cyber Cat Ears Headband

If lace isn't your thing, I'm really feeling these cyber cat ears from TopShop. The sharp plastic points make them feel slightly more dangerous. They're the perfect complement to a night out on the prowl.

To soften them up a bit, the headband is also available in a super-pretty floral print, which makes me want to dress up and drink tea in a garden. Whoever thought there'd be a day when there would be so many different styles of cat ears to choose from, and that you could mix and match them to fit any outfit or mood? 

4. Sarah Beaded Cat Headband

I'm intrigued by how unconventional cat headbands can really add polish to any outfit, just like a perfect piece of jewelry. The beaded kitty headband by BooHoo flips the notion of a pearl necklace on its head by crafting the beads into a cool headpiece that still looks simple and sweet.

While it's perfectly fine to wear the ears with whatever you'd like, I love the juxtaposition of pairing the delicate pearls with a leopard-print shirt with a studded collar. It's a really interesting way to keep with the entire cat theme, but still looks fresh and current.

5. Geo Cat Ears Headband

Out of all of the headbands I've seen this season, the black-and-white Geo Cat Ears Headband by TopShop takes the title of most chic. The Art Deco-inspired design is tailor-made for the sophisticated feline fashionista who isn't ready to sacrifice her fashion sense for the love of cats.

4. Multicat Leggings

Neon shades and Persian cats are a weakness of mine, bringing me back to the days of Lisa Frank, stirrup leggings, and those plastic clips that you attached to the bottom of your T-shirt to look cool. Mix them all together in modern day, and you end up with the edgy looks of Latvian brand QooQoo, who know how to bring the cats with a healthy dose of nostalgia.

These semi-sheer, polyester, and elastane leggings from ModCloth may not be a substitute for actual pants, but don't let that stop you from wearing them loud and proud. The smiling black-and-gray-striped kitties have stylish red collars and sweet white spots on the tips of their tails. But why wear something anyone can buy when you can make your own version? Not only will you save cash, but it's an awesome excuse to get your kitty craft on and end up with a truly one-of-a-kind result. 

Below, you'll find five of my favorite DIY cat fashion projects. There's a chic cat sweatshirt, a purse, tights, flats, and nail decals.

1. DIY cat toe shoes

Recently, Daria from Kittenhood ("A fashion blog with a decent dose of cats"), featured a guest post by Kate of Scathingly Brilliant for some of the cutest do-it-yourself cat shoes I've ever seen! A few weeks ago I wrote a post about My 5 Favorite Cat-Inspired Flats Right Now, and if I were re-writing it today, these definitely would have made the list.

Kate transformed a boring pair of flats into some truly brilliant feline footwear using little more than black paint, brushes, and tape. Click here to read the full step-by-step tutorial, which you can complete in 15 minutes or less!

2. DIY cat sweatshirt

Sweatshirts are the best when it comes to bumming around in cold weather, and I basically live in a Forever 21 Garfield sweatshirt when I'm hanging around my apartment. If you have some old, plain shirts or tees taking up space in your drawers, Chloe from Refinery29 has a great idea to jazz them up with a super chic jewel studded cat design.

Using a marker, embroidery floss, rhinestones, and some glue, Chloe demonstrates how to easily and inexpensively turn a grey sweatshirt into a cat top that rivals any pricey cat sweater currently on the market. There's a ton of cool possibilities for this look, and I'm thinking of recreating my own kitties on a black shirt with white thread! Watch the DIY video for all the details here.

3. DIY cat clutch

Out of any kind of cat fashion I own, I find that I get the most compliments when I rock a cat bag. My Jason Wu black cat tote is a particular favorite, as it leads to a deluge of "Where did you get that?" comments, which inevitably leads to black cat stories being exchanged in earnest.

This eye-catching cat clutch is from a guest post on Scathingly Brilliant, and was created by Casey of Noir Girl. It requires a little more skill than the other projects featured, and you'll need fabric, snaps, and a sewing machine to start. Sewing is not exactly my forte, but I can also see using some of Casey's decorative techniques to cattify a pre-made purse. 4. DIY cat tights

I've seen some really cute cat tights around lately in the $30 to $40 dollar range, which is a high price to pay for something that can be ripped to shreds at a moments notice by busy kitty claws. Fortunately for us, Kara from Sprinkles in Springs came up with this money-saving DIY project that only requires some sheer tights and fabric paint!

5. DIY cat nail decals

I know I can't be the only one who drools over cat nail art on Pinterest, forlorn over the fact that I don't have the artistic skills necessary to carry out some of the coolest designs. (Full disclosure: I have a board solely dedicated to dozens of feline-inspired fingertips.)

The secret behind the realistic nail stickers is printable rub-on transfer paper, which you can use to print out any design of your choice. This is one of 25 cats name[d] Sam. (You'll understand in a minute, we promise. Keep reading.)

The three lithographs you see here were created by Andy Warhol, and online bids for them at Christie's were between $2,200 and $3,200 last we checked. They’re taken from a collection known as 25 Cats Name[d] Sam and One Blue Pussy.

So whether you like the pieces or not, you might pay just to have a Warhol, even if it’s not a redundant soup can or a swarm of Jackie O portraits on acid -- images that helped make Warhol famous. These are cats. And you like cats. And you might pay thousands of dollars for one of these prints even if you’re sure that my cat could do better than that!

Ah, modern art. It’s a paradox, isn’t it?

These are [presumably] two more cats name[d] Sam.

The smallest print measures 4.25 inches by about 5.6 inches, another measures 8.75 inches by 5 inches, while a third measures 9 inches by 12 inches. The latter one has a different cat printed on each side of the same paper -- which we thought was a sick Warhol joke (“Help! How am I supposed to display this thing?”) until we saw that the prints were done in 1954, a decade before Pop Art was a thing, and when Warhol inhabited the fringe of New York's art scene. With these prints, he was probably just messing around, not thinking people would want to buy one and frame it to impress their friends.
