Well, I am a little miffed with my meowmy. She did not allow me back on Catster to put my new birthday gifties in my diary yesterday. I got so many greetings and gifties after I logged off. Thank you so much to effurypurr who helped me celebrate and are still helping me celebrate.
Before I begin my list, I must tell you that my meowmy found I had again NOT eaten this morning. Maybe I ate too much cupcake yesterday? So, she offered me all the foods and I just turned my nose up at them. So, this time, she wet my Royal Canin Green Pea and Duck and smashed it up very fine and made it a little runny and she had the nerve to FF me! Yes, you heard me. Can you believe she did that to ME? Pffffftttt. I got my normal feeding through the syringe FF. *shakes head* Then, at my pill time, Meowmy gave me the appetite stimulant. This time she gave me 1/4 pill. By lunchtime, I was very "agitated" again. Meowmy is hoping that it will keep me interested in eating so I don't lose any weight before my August 19th visit at the specialist.
Now to the wonderful birthday greetings and gifties that I received yesterday.

I am 12 today. My meowmy is rejoicing and so happy to see me celebrate number 12. I have had a hard year with many ups and downs. For those of you who have followed my series of illnesses, it actually began back in February of 2009. Meowmy was glad I saw my 11th year. We are really blessed to see my 12th. Thank you, dear furiends, for all the love, purrs, prayers and support you have given to me during this past 1 1/2 years. My meowmy has not allowed me to paw in my diary as often as I should. I really do need another secretary to help me.
I shared my birthday with a furry special furiend and a member of a most revered furmily on Catster. Riley has the furry same birthday. Happy 6th Birthday to you, Riley. I am honored to share this day with you. I share this birthday, also, with some other sweet furiends. Celebrating their 6th birthday are Mitchell and Beckie, celebrating his 10th birthday is Casey and celebrating their 5th birthday are Sugar and Spice. I wish all of my furiends a furry Happy Birthday!
I want to concatulate my sisfur Karisma on her DDP honor today. She shares it with Tethys Fluffkins who is the DOTD and with Francis who is a sweet furiend of ours and with a cute orangie named Jasper. CONCATS to all of you!
I need to provide an update from last week. I had eating issues and had more FF days than I wanted. I have to eat in order to receive my insulin. We still don't know what happened to my appetite. I did end up receiving the appetite stimulant. This time, Meowmy only gave me 1/8 of a pill. I had a surprise visit (to me) to see my specialist on Thursday, July 29th. Meowmy allowed them to take me in the back and I saw those dreaded vampires. I was back in the vampire room for about 20 minutes or so. They brought me into a room and called my pawrents in to see Dr. Jaeger and discuss ME! When Dr. Jaeger came in, he said he wanted to see the results from my blood that those vampires drained from my poor neck... they even left a hole in my little neck. Pfffftttt. He said if my liver values were improved that he wanted to keep me on the Enrofloxin (Baytril) for several more weeks. He did reduce my Prednisolone to 3/4 pill daily.
Meowmy discussed my lack of eating interest with Dr. Jaeger. He told her to come back the next day and he would have Neil gather some samples for me to try. I am not supposed to have chicken, beef or corn or the by products of those with my issues. So, that night, I ended up with the A/D again. Meowmy noticed that my "movements" were getting even runnier with it. The antibiotics make my "movements" very soft but this was beyond soft.
Meowmy did not hear from my blood work until late on Friday, July 30. It was good news in that my liver values had improved. (Dr. Jaeger said in reviewing my records, my liver levels were relatively normal when my treatment began and he thinks all the drugs are affecting it.) So, Dr. Jaeger ordered more of the Enrofloxin, thus making my only change the reduction of the Prednisolone amount I am taking. My weight was exactly the same as the last time I was at CVS so that was good. I had not lost any more weight. Still 11.9 pounds. Yesterday, my appetite was more normal, also. I don't care for the samples that I brought home. It was Hills D/D Duck and Green Pea, Hills D/D Rabbit and Green Pea and Hills D/D Venison and Green Pea. I just turn my little nose up at those.
Meowmy went back to CVS to pick up my Enrofloxin on Friday evening. So things are back to "normal" for now... Meowmy says as long as I eat well, that is.
Now, to my birthday ~
On July 30th, Andre and his sweet furmily sent me a delicious blue iced cupcake. They said, "Hope you have a pawsome birthday Hooch!!"
Yesterday, Simon and his furmily sent me a yummy shrimp. They said, "Happy Meowday Hooch from the Kit Kat Club. Have lots of treats and take in all the hugs you can get. purrs, SIMON and family"

We are very excited to be celebrating your special day with you after the rough year you have been having. We continue to purr and pray for you - We love you! Enjoy your big day! Love, Harry, Albie, and Family"
Riley and his precious furmily sent me a cupcake. They said, "Happy Birthday, Hooch! I didn't realize we shared the same birthday. We continue to purr for you every day! Love, Riley and family" I did not realize (or remember that either). What a great furiend with whom to share a birthday. Happy Birthday to you, Riley.

My last few days have been more iffy.. at least, the mornings have been. I have not been eating as well and today and yesterday morning, I had to have more FF to be sure I had enough food before my insulin shot. I seem to be eating purrty well later in the day and have not had an FF in the evening and Meowmy has not given me the appetite stimulant again... yet!
Yesterday afternoon, a package arrived for Karisma from her beloved Lolly. All of us kitties were furry curious about this new package. When Meowmy helped Karisma open it, we found three furry nice handmade catnip toys. All of us, including me, went just bonkers over the new toys. Karisma was highly miffed because we were taking HER new toys.
Meowmy said that watching me play with the new toys was a true blessing to her. I was having a ball and rolling around on the floor like a kitten in pure delight. I was bunny kicking the toys and licking them and just enjoying myself so much. Meowmy said she has not seen me have this much fun in a furry long while and she told Karisma that she must share her toys with her siblings. Karisma was okay with sharing... well, she purrtended to be anyway. Boy, oh boy, did I have a great time playing with her toys. Thank you, Lolly, for a truly wonderful time.

Yesterday was a very sad day for us. We learned that our precious furfriend Mercedes made an unexpected journey to the Rainbow Bridge. Mercy, as she was known by many, was one of the leaders of the Catster Community. Her pictures (and those of her whole furmily) were among the best you will ever see. Mercy was sweet, kind, furry funny, and most beautiful. Her pawrents are simply wonderful, loving and grieving beyond words. Our hearts go out to Janet and the whole furmily. We just could not write about the loss of our beloved furiend yesterday after we heard the sad news. Mercy, you know how much you will be missed by your earthly furmily and the many furiends you leave behind. Please know that we will miss and love you forever. You have left your pawprints of love in so many hearts, including ours. There are just no words to truly express what we are feeling.
An update on me - Thursday, I continued to have little interest in my food and I ended up by throwing up a short time after my pills and new pill were given. Meowmy did not hear me throw up but she knew it was me because of the shape of the undigested food and the dye from the new pill. Well, Meowmy did get on the phone and called my specialist and my meowmy and the specialist could not connect. Meowmy was persistent and kept calling until someone finally connected her with Neal, the tech. He talked to Dr. Jaeger and they decided to prescribe Cerenia to control the nausea/vomiting. This was about lunchtime. Meowmy kept calling Dr. Booker's office as that is where Dr. Jaeger sent the prescription since it is much closer than going back to Dr. Jaeger's hospital. For some reason, it took all afternoon for Dr. Jaeger's office to phone in my prescription to my doc doc. Meowmy was becoming most upset. She knows I am not the only cat in the world BUT I AM my meowmy's world! She kept saying how long can it take to fax or call in the prescription. Finally, about 4:30 while Meowmy was on the phone with Dr. Booker's office, the fax came in. Meowmy hurried over and picked up my prescription and she came home and gave me a Cerenia to help with nausea.
I was not furry interested in eating so another FF night. To make matters worse, we had company spending the night in MY room - both Thursday and Friday night in MY room.
Friday brought basically the same for me. I was not furry interested in food but I did not throw up. Meowmy put my new pill in the gel capsules she has and I kept the new pill down on Friday. Unfortunately, my appetite did not improve. I showed interest and would sniff but then walk away. So, more of the FF good times.
Saturday morning started off like Thursday and Friday, with my interest in food being very slight. Meowmy decided that it was time to give me the appetite stimulant. YES, the one that caused me to become a little agitated the last time I had it at the speciality hospital. This time Meowmy decided to try the 1/8 of a pill rather than the 1/4 they gave me the last time to see if that would help. Meowmy said you could tell I was "different" after I got the pill... she called me antsy. Can you believe that? Evidently the pill worked because by last night, I was a little more interested in eating again.
This morning I am not exactly back to my normal eating but on the road to it, we hope.
Our hearts are very saddened with the loss of so many special furfuriends in recent months. Today, we mourn for our dear furiend Mercy. Sending her pawrents much love.

This morning I was waiting for Meowmy to release me from my room so I could roam the house. Meowmy did notice that I had NOT eaten all my food during the night. This bothered her a little because normally all my night food is gone and I am anxious to get my morning feeding. I DO INSIST that one of my pawrents stay with me while I eat, however. All I did was just sniff at what Meowmy put in the bowl and walk away.
Meowmy took me downstairs and filled that bowl and laid down on the floor beside me. I sniffed again and refused to eat it. By now, Meowmy is getting furry concerned. She went into the kitchen and scurried my siblings out of it and shut the door. She opened the Science Diet A/D and brought out the syringe to feed me. She left the food in the bowl while she was preparing to put it in the syringe and, to her surprise, I started eating from the bowl. I ended up eating about 1/3 of a can without any coercing from Meowmy. Meowmy did not feel that was enough since I had not eaten all my food from the night before. She tried to encourage me to eat more of the A/D but I was done. So, she decided that I needed at least 1/2 can so she filled the syringe with what I had not eaten and guess what? Yes, I got a small FF.
Then, she waited for 1/2 hour and gave me my insulin and Pepcid. Then, we waited 40 minutes and she gave me my morning drugs. Meowmy does have a call into Dr. Jaeger to see about the cautions of the newest drug and to see if there is another dry food that I could try since I seem to be disinterested in my Royal Canine Green Pea and Duck suddenly.
To say Meowmy is not concerned more than normal would be an understatement today.

I tell you that pawrents are furry sneaky with us. Today, I was enjoying what I thought was a normal day when about 12, my meowmy scooped me up and took me into the living room and put me in the prison carrier BEFORE I knew what had happened. I did not even have enough time to muster up peeing on her.
We scurried off to Carolina Veterinary Specialist Hospital where I had a 12:30 appointment with Dr. Jaeger. Funny how Meowmy furgot to tell me this morning. I did not have enough time to hunt for a super duper hiding place.
Then, you know what my pawrents did? They left me at CVS to go have lunch at John's. They like to eat at John's when they get on that side of town. The tech told my pawrents that it would be okay to leave me for about 45 minutes. I counted and they were actually 50 minutes. I think I will report them to CVS.
Dr. Jaeger came into the room where I had been taken in my prison carrier to chat with my pawrents. He told them that he wanted to wait to see what my blood work showed. Yes, I had to see the vampires. He decided to cut the steroids back to just one per day. He told my pawrents that he would wait until he got the report back to decide when he needed to see me again and what additional things I might need. I had lost more weight, even though I am eating well. I was 11.9 pounds today. Dr. Jaeger said that goes along with the issues with my diabetes and other things going on with me.
Meowmy got the call from Dr. Jaeger about 6 PM our time. She never likes to hear from Dr. Jaeger as it is usually not the best news. He said that basically there was no change in the blood work. My liver enzymes are still the same. The ALT was still elevated indicating some liver cell damage. He decided to put me on a second antibiotic - Enrofloxacin (Baytril) to take once daily in the amount of 1 1/4 tablet. Meowmy is concerned about the last one as it can cause liver values to increase, affect my appetite and it can interact with the actions of the Pepcid. The worst thing is that Baytril can cause blindness, although a rare side effect. So now, my pawrents must go back across town tonight to pick up the Enrofloxacin for me to start tomorrow morning. Meowmy is furry uneasy about this but we KNOW we must do something for me.
We have been furry sad lately with the losses of so many special furiends. On May 4th, we lost a dear and special furiend named Tommy, on May 7th, we lost another dear and special furiend named Ginnger, on May 25th, we lost another dear and special furiend named Punkin, on July 11, we lost another dear and special furiend named Quinn C. and on July 14th, we lost yet another dear and special furiend named Emily Felicity. We are so furry sad about all the earthly goodbyes. We will furever love and remember these special furiends who have left deep holes in our hearts with their earthly departure but they left us with their pawprints of loved stamped furever in our hearts.

About mid June I began to not act well. Meowmy thought I seemed a little weaker and she was wondering if I could be low on my potassium level or something might be going on with me. I was scheduled to go back to CVS (Carolina Veterinary Specialists) on July 1. Meowmy wanted to check my blood before then. I was eating well but still drinking way too much and peeing a ton from my diabetes being wonky from the steroids I have to be on for my pancreatitis issue.
On June 24th I saw our regular doc doc (Dr. Booker) for blood work. The fat in my blood prevented them from determining if I has a potassium issue. I got a shot of Adequan (lubes the joints) and I had lost a little more weight (12.7). I was to see Dr. Jaeger on July 1 but he wanted the lab report from Dr. Booker.
It took 4 months last year to get my pancreas issue stable and this spell with the pancreatits has been even worse for me. My meowmy is praying that Dr. Jaeger can get things under control again and I will have more quality life ahead of me.
My dad had gone to Springfield, MO and then on to Wichita, KS during this time. He was supposed to be home for my visit on July 1st to Dr. Jaeger but he did not make. Dr. Jaeger's facility was swarming with doggies and kitties. They had many emergencies and we were a long time waiting to be seen. They took my blood and I got a dime sized bruise on my neck from it. Dr. Jaeger told Meowmy that they could call when my results came back and the it could be as long as three days. Imagine Meowmy's surprise when in the early afternoon, Dr. Jaeger himself called. Meowmy doesn't like it when that happens because she thinks something is wrong. And this time she was right - one of my liver enzymes was/is elevated and I must go on yet another antibiotic called Clindamycin.
Dr. Jaeger wants to cut my insulin to 1 1/2 units 2 times daily and my pred to 1 pill in the morning and 1/2 pill in the evening. For now, Dr. Jaeger won't be able to treat my other issues with leukerance now because it messes with the liver.
On July 2 I took my first Clindamycin pill. Meowmy says she hopes it will help me. I have to go back to Dr. Jaeger on July 14th for more blood work and possibly an overnight stay so he can do a curve on my glucose levels to determine how my body really reacts in a 24 hour period.
Then on Tuesday, July 6th our whole side of the street had a power failure due to a tree falling on the wires (2 doors down), breaking the pole and taking out the electricity, cable and phones on our street. We were without our power and the phone for about 24 hours and it was furry hot. It was morning (July 7th) when we got our electricity restored and was almost night before we actually got our internet and phone service back up. ON THE POSITIVE side, we do have city water and not a well now as we did with Hurricane Hugo. My pawrents said they could not flush their litter box for 2 weeks during the power loss then. And some of our neighbors only got their cable back last night.
We are thankful that the tree did not fall on anyone. Our neighbor was out with his dog when it fell. It was his tree and yard.
There were lots of trucks and people trying to get effurything restored. This went on all night long (July 6th and into July 7th). There were people coming and going in the yards. And we think that is how our doggie brofur Hunter escaped. He was found the morning of the 7th on a busy road about a block away and taken to the Matthews Animal Control who called Charlotte and had him transported to the Animal Shelter there. It is unfortunately a kill facility.
It was a few hours before we learned what had happened to Hunter after we missed him. We do have a fenced yard and Hunter has never gotten out before so we are purrty sure that one of the men repairing the wires left the gate open long enough for Hunter to escape. They may not have even known they let him out. Meowmy actually found Hunter when she called Matthews AC and they told her they had him and where he was sent.
Somehow, Hunter had lost his tags with his name and phone numbers on it so he was a stray to them. My pawrents hurried to Charlotte to reclaim Hunter from his adventure. They had to pay a fee to reclaim him, have a Bordatella vaccine and have him microchipped right there. It was a big adventure for them and a very scary moment. My dad was scheduled to be at the hospital to have a HER-KNEE-AH operation on July 8th. My pawrents were to be at the hospital at 5:30 AM. Meowmy said that too much was happening for her comfort.
My dad did have the surgery and he did furry well. My dad is NOT a good sick purrson but my meowmy said that she was furry proud of him this time. He has not complained and is doing really well. Maybe he wants to be as brave as I have been with my illness?
And a report on my meowmy's furiend Daryle and her eye surgery. The surgery was a partial success for her. The vision may improve slightly as time goes on but there are no guarantees. The funny part about all this is that Meowmy has not memorized many phone numbers and when she got the new phone she entered Daryle's number incorrectly. Meowmy has been calling the wrong number all this time and had become furry concerned about Daryle. When Meowmy finally looked it up, she realized that she had been calling the wrong number. Both Daryle and my meowmy had a good laugh over Meowmy's failure to put the right number in her phone.
Thank you, dear furiends for your love and support to me throughout this past year and a half since I became ill. I know that you, my furiends, have helped me through so much. I love you all.

I must apawlogize for my meowmy's lack of helping me with my diary entries of late. Part of her slack manner has resulted because of her concern for me and not really knowing what to say. The other part is the new and less user friendly Catster format. Our catputer wants to lag and even lock up as we try to find the things on Catster that were once so user friendly and common to us. So, that being said, we will be patient on the Catster problems we are having and Meowmy will allow me to chat in my diary now.
I must thank each of you who has prayed for me and sent me loving gifties for my page. Meowmy has saved them in a draft and will allow me to list them soon. She has to create the links and it seems she has not had lots of extra time in a LONG while.
As most of you know, I had to go to CVS... not the drug store... but Carolina Veterinary Specialists Medical Center (hospital) on May 20th (late afternoon) and came home late on May 24th. You can read my diary dated May 23rd for a review of the what and why. When I was discharged on the 24th, I was told I had to return on June 10th for another ultrasound, blood work and urinalysis.
Well, since things appeared normal to me that morning (June 10th), I did not expect anything to happen UNTIL my meowmy picked me up and headed out the front door with me in her arms. WAIT..... NOOOOOOOOOOO! I started trembling terribly and made my meowmy feel so badly. She did find that I calmed down a little about halfway to our destination. Don't fear, I got EVEN with HER for the trickery. My dad pulled up in front of CVS and my meowmy got out, with me in her arms. I was fine UNTIL we reached the front door of THAT place. Guess what I did next? Yep... all over my meowmy. I peed on both her and myself. And Meowmy did not get upset with me at all.
We were immediately taken back to a room and a very nice lady brought my meowmy some dry towels to clean herself up. Meowmy told them it was not a big deal and she knew I was scared. They dried me off a little, too. Then the lady was about to take me back into the scary part of the hospital and Meowmy asked her how long it would be. She did not know but went back to ask and came back and told Meowmy it could be an hour or so. Can you believe that my pawrents did next? They left me there alone with THOSE people and my pawrents went out to eat? How rude!!!! Do you think they knew the vampires were attacking me? And the "other" people put that yucky gel on me and waved that ultrasound THINGY over my now greasy belly! All the while I was being tortured, my pawrents were about a mile away eating. *shakes head*
When my pawrents returned, they waited about a half hour in the waiting area and then they were called back into one of the rooms. Soon, a tech brought me into the room with my pawrents and she explained my new orders for the next three weeks. I am to finish all my amoxicillin and they were not going to refill it. So when that runs out, I will stop that medication. I am to continue the Metronidazole as we have been doing, the Prednisolone as we had been doing (this was the one Dr. Jaeger had hoped to start lowering... maybe next time?), the Pepcid as we had done and the Glargine (Lantus) shots. The latter is to be just shy of 2 units now.. not much difference. If my appetite goes away, I have the Mirtazapine but so far we have not had to use it at all. So the only real change is we will stop the amoxicillin when I run out.
I must eat to avoid liver problems (hepatic lipidosis) but so far that has not been a problem for me. I am chowing down, even though I am losing weight. My weight on the 10th was an even 13 pounds.
Dr. Jaeger came in and talked with my Meowmy (my dad was outside on the phone). He told my meowmy that the swelling in my pancreas was going down. It is still not where it should be but it is going down in size and I do still have the abdominal effusion but it, too, has gone down some... but Dr. Jaeger did not do much more than gloss over that... I guess for now, it is not Dr, Jaeger's biggest concern for me.
My pawrents loaded me up and we checked out and they unloaded their pocketbook... Say, I can't help it. I am sick.
To my meowmy's surprise she got a call from the specialist's tech after we returned home with my blood work results. (We weren't expecting the call until later - maybe even on Monday) The tech told Meowmy that my results were "Fairly" good - his exact words. My triglycerides are high but, with my diabetes and the Prednisolone I am on, that may or may not be significant - Dr. Jaeger wants to recheck my blood work again in three weeks on July 1st. Overall, my blood work showed not much change from last time but that is not surprising with all of my issues, according to my doc doc. My glucose was 461 (high)on June 10th but that was of no surprise with me being on steroids.
Please keep me in your prayers. I am making some improvements but not yet pronounced okay... I am being watched carefully by my meowmy. Meowmy really likes the specialist and knows he is trying to get me better so I can hang around and bug all of you for a long time to come.

I am home! I got to come home last night. I am so happy to be home again. I will have to let my meowmy take over and I will be checking my messages and gifties later. Thank you all so much for your prayers, purrs, love and support for me and for my pawrents. Love, Hooch
From Hooch's meowmy ~
I got a call yesterday morning from the hospital telling me that if Hooch did well during the day, they would be letting him come home last night. I was a nervous Nelly all day, not really know if I would be bringing my little man home or not. I got no calls to tell me any different during the day so we headed to the hospital last evening to pick Hooch up. When we arrived, we were told he was indeed being discharged and so we settled our bill and received a three page sheet of all he had received during the hospital stay... and that was only the bill. We were told to wait in the waiting room/lounge until someone could see us to explain Hooch's home care. We enjoyed a delicious cup of coffee... good for the nerves, right? Well... we were more hyper after the coffee.
We waited for what seemed like an eternity to finally see Hooch. It was probably only a half hour or so but it was forever to us. They brought Hooch out in the lobby and invited us back into a room to discuss Hooch's home care.
Hooch will be receiving a total of 4 units of Lantus/Glargine daily - 2 units in the morning and 12 hours later 2 more units. I have to be sure that he is eating on his own and keeping it down or force feed him about 20 minutes prior to his insulin shot. I have decided to force feed him a little 20 minutes before the shot just to be safe unless I have seen him eat during that time frame. I am to wait about 20 to 30 minutes after the shot and then give him 1/2 Pepcid to help coat his tummy. The steroid he will be getting can cause bleeding so I have to watch carefully for black poos or coffee ground throw up. I wait about 20 minutes to be sure the tummy is coated and then Hooch is to get (1) Amoxicillin, 200 mg, (2) Metronidiazole, 250 mg tablet - 1/4 tablet (must encase this one in a gel capsule as it causes foaming) - this is an Immuno-modulatory and anti-diarrhea and another antibiotic - and (3) Prednisolone, 5 mg tablet. These three are to be done 2 times daily, as with the insulin shots. IF Hooch is not eating, he is to take Mirtazapine, 15 mg tablet - 1/8 to 1/4 tablet once every three days. The latter was due today BUT Hooch ate all of his food from his bowl during the night so I decided to wait on this. Maybe he is getting his appetite back?
I brought home a 6 page printout of Hooch's care and conditon. It contains so much, many things I don't understand. However, the highlights are this - when Hooch's pancreatitis report came back his was off the graph. It was pancreatitis with a value >50 mcg/L when a value >5.4 mcg/L suggests feline pancreatits. So Hooch's was raging. The bloodwork performed on 5/20/2010 revealed mild hypophosphatemia (2.9), moderate hypoalbuminemia (1.7) and mild Hypokalemia(3.5). The abdominal untrasound performed by Dr. Dodd noted pancreatitis and abdominal effusion. The physical findings at the hospital were free fluid on abdominal palpation and what seems to be a mild abdominal mass on palpation.
The hospital did an abdominal ultrasound of their own. The findings of abnormal note were pancreas significantly enlarged on the right and left side of the abdomen, with some evidence of edema around the pancreas - note - seems to be enlarged because of tissue not edema. The comments were significant increase in the pancreatic size, free fluid within the abdomen and enlarged spleen.
Hooch's Thoracic radiographs, (3V) - Radiology Report - Three images of the thorax are available. The cardiac silhouette is mildly enlarged and measures 2.5 intercostal spaces wide. The shape of the heart is normal. The pulmonayr vasculature are normal. There is a moderate, diffuse bronchointerstitial pattern noted in the lungs. Conclusions - Mild cardiomegaly. (This is a nonspecific finding. Pericardial fat could be accentuating the appearance and correlation with any heart murmur may be helpful to further assess the signficance if needed.) Moderate, diffuse bronchointerstitical pattern in the lung. (Thsi is likely due to ta combination of aging changes as well as superimposed obesity. No definite pulmonary metastatic neoplasia is noted at this time.) (Decreased detail in the abdomen consistent with effusion. Mass effect caudal to the stomach consistent with an enlarged pancreas. It is not possible to differentiate pancreatitis from neoplasie radiographically.)
Lastly, the note which causes me the most concern at this time, of course, is this -
Enlarged spleen which could be reactive secondary to pancreatic issue or related to a primary infiltrative cancerous process (lymphoma, mast cell tumor).
So PLEASE continue to pray for Hooch and his final diagnosis and outcome. I do have HOPE and FAITH.
He is so happy to be back home. He has checked every corner in the house and hissed a time or two at the other cats, who are hissing at him. They think he smells funny now. I say hiss away all they want and get over it!

From Hooch's mom ~
I am sorry I have not been able to write in Hooch's diary for several days. I want to thank Hazel Lucy's meowmy and Cocoa's meowmy for helping to keep updates on my brave little man.
It has been a rollercoaster ride for Hooch and us again. On Thursday (May 20), Dr. Elliott determined that Hooch needed to have an ultrasound done. Hooch had been spending the days at the hospital and coming home at night so he could have 24/7 watching. Dr. Ginny Dodd, of Dodd Veterinary Imaging Services, INC., came to the hospital where Hooch was and did Hooch's ultrasound. It was determined that Hooch needed to go to a speciality hospital. Dr. Dodd is the same one who did Hooch's last ultrasound on March 18th, 2009. Her report this time reads a lot but the abnormality part read ~
Assessment - Pancreas - R/O inflammation most likely. Suspect Steatitis of peripancreatic fat with edema and peritoneal fluid secondary to severe inflammation. Abdominal fluid - 1.022, appears slightly cloudy, in house evaluation - mainly PMN and RBC - mostly neutrophils and lymphs, few macrophages, no intracelluar bacteria seen.
Now, I must admit that most of the above meant nothing to me as I do not understand all the medical terms and have not looked them up at this point in time.
We were sent from Dr. Booker's hospital straight to Carolina Veterinary Specialists and Hooch was assigned to Dr. Jordan Jaeger, who is a specialist in the field of Hooch's problems. We did not see Dr. Jaeger on the 20th but saw the night physician, Dr. Todd Smith. This is a wonderful facility where the specialists provide 24/7 care. Dr. Smith talked to us for a long while and told us that Hooch would probably be in the facility for a minimun of a week. He planned to put a tube into his neck vein so they could draw blood every two hours and not use Hooch as a pin cushion. He said that he suspected that due to the pancreatitis and severity of this attack and the diabetes to complicate his health, they would be putting a tube in to feed him to bypass the pancreas and that he may end up having to have the accumulation of "stuff" in his belly removed surgically. So, we saw Hooch briefly before we left the hospital that evening.
On the 21st, we scheduled a meeting with Dr. Jaeger to find out what he had decided about Hooch after the morning exam. So, we entered the room expecting to be told the same thing that the admitting physician had told us. We were upset over that but after Dr. Jaeger gave us his thoughts, the first option seemed to be wonderful. Dr. Jaeger is a loving, caring man... and very honest. He said that with Hooch's extremely enlarged pancreas and something outside of the stomach (I forgot exactly what as some things are still a blur for me) extending into a much larger area than normal, that he thought Hooch was suffering from pancreatic cancer. I know that at that point I went into shock. I could not believe my ears. Dr. Jaeger said he wanted to perform an FNA biopsy as soon as possible. My husband and I were both stunned and in tears. Dr. Jaeger said we could visit with Hooch for a while prior to the procedure. We got a lovely hour visit with our little man. He was so scared. He was trembling... but then so were we. I have to admit that his fur was wet with my tears after the visit. Dr. Jaeger had hoped to hear the results from Hooch's biopsy that evening but that was not to be.
On the 22nd, I waited around the house all day until the phone call came in. It was Dr. Jaeger with what he called the BEST news possible. He said that Hooch did not have pancreatic cancer. He warned me that my little man is NOT out of the woods and is a very sick boy but that this news was truly the best we could have gotten. Dr. Jaeger said Hooch is refusing to eat and is being force fed and that he had given Hooch an appetite stimulant. Unfortunately, Hooch had a negative reaction to the drug and had become highly agitated. Dr. Jaeger said not to worry about his agitation and that with time it should not cause this extreme reaction. The stimulant is Mirtazapine (Remeron). I looked it up and the side effects read -
Mirtazapine decreases cortisol secretion by the adrenal glands but has not actually panned out as a treatment for Cushing's syndrome, where excess adrenal steroids are produced by the adrenal glands.
Serotonin syndrome is a potential side effect should brain levels of serotonin get too high, but this syndrome generally requires a combination of serotonin-increasing medications. Elevated heart rate, tremors/shivering, dilated pupils, difficulty breathing, elevated body temperature, or high blood pressure can all be signs of serotonin syndrome. Animals with serotonin syndrome sometimes demonstrate general hyperactivity. If there is any question that serotonin syndrome is occurring, cyproheptadinecan be used as an antidote.
For the first time in days, after we left the hospital, I had an appetite. My husband and I stopped by to eat a home cooked meal at a restaurant nearby the hospital. It was the best food I have had in a long while... but I could not eat it all. I think the waiter thought I did not like it... I explained I had a very sick kitty and had been very worried and not eating. He seemed to understand and almost embarrassed that he had mentioned my not-empty plate.
I think exhaustion took over my body because we got home about 9 PM and I took a bath and then layed on the sofa to watch TV. I must have fallen asleep quickly. I never even heard the phone ring when Barbi called to check on Hooch.
It really felt like the weight of the world had been taken off my shoulders.
This morning, Dr. Jaeger called to say Hooch is still not eating nor pooping. He said that he will probably continue to need the appetite stimulate for a while. He encouraged us to visit Hooch this evening... like we need encouragement. We have scheduled a visit in the 5 - 7:30 PM time frame as we seem to get longer visits. Dr. Jaeger said we will have to treat Hooch with some mega steroids and that will certainly compromise Hooch's diabetes. This journey is certainly not over and Hooch needs some strong prayers and purrs still.
The visitation schedule at the hospital is by appointment only and the hours are 11 AM - 1 PM, 5 PM - 7:30 PM and 9 PM - 11 PM. You are required to call and make an appointment with reception prior to a visit and visits are limited to 20-30 minutes. So far, we have been lucky to get hour visits with Hooch. I am looking forward to another visit with my handsome boy this afternoon...evening... whatever one calls it.
I want to apologize in advance for not listing the well wishes for my little man. Hooch will be very upset with me when he finds out. I probably won't get to send a personal thank-you (this has been a birthday and diary honors month for us and I am overwhelmed with the wonderful and sweet wishes) but I want each one of you to know how very much each one means to us. Your prayers, love and support have made a very big difference. I truly believe the prayers brought Hooch through. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
