Rodent Ulcer

I've been having these sores on my back. They started last December. It was about the size of a nickle and looked like I had been skinned. Mommie thought that I had gone under some roofing tin and hurt myself. Then a couple of months later, again. Then a month or so another one. This time mommie started to think back, and when it was time for the last couple doses of Frontline, I had a new spot. So, just in case it was related, she started to use Advantage on me. She did this a couple of months and the places came again.

So early this month (July) mommie took me to the vet's. He said I had a form of rodent ulcer basically, it had a really odd name that mommie cannot remember, but the red blood cells migrate to an area or something and it occurs after having a reaction to something. It may have been the Frontline, it may be something in the house or outside the house. It's really difficult to find out for sure. So I got a shot of steriod. Within a few days the sores I had at this time (one was the size of a half-dollar) were healing very nicely. Then after about 10 days or so, I got a small one in a completely different area, the side of my neck. Now, it was recommended to use ovaban (like Boss) since I had a new one to appear so soon after the shot.. I've had only one dose and now have 2 more places on my upper back (usually area).

Mommie just looked at my back, there are three places now, she says she is going to call the vet first thing in the morning and that I need to stick close by (in reality if I really knew what she was planning, I'd skedaddle as fast as I could). :) Socks

Sunday morning was interesting here. I found a bat (the flying kind) in the weeds along the ditch across the road. Mommie saw that I had been checking out the weeds. Then as time went by a clowder of us (that means a group of cats) were investigating the weeds, but we would move away really quick. She thought snake, so she came to check it out. She saw what she thought could not be a bat, then she got a branch and touched it. It opened and hissed (is that what bats do?) at her. Mommie then would not let us near it. She did not want us to hurt it or it to hurt us, but she thought that it was the one in more danger. It was so small, yet it had a mouthful of teeny tiny teeth. It started cleaning itself after mommie touched it, and then wanted to just sleep. Mommie tried calling the wildlife and our game warden without any answer. So she and Donald were going to move the weed it was on, and put it somewhere out of our cat play area. When she tried to cut the weed, it stretched out, then started crawling. It went deeper into the brush, so they figured it would be safer now that it was deeper in the weeds. We did not give it to mommie as a gift, so she is hoping that it survived. We like bats here, we usually only have one flying around our security light. They eat those bugs and we appreciate that. :) Socks

I love the outdoors. Patches, Tiger and I spend a lot of time outside. We nap together. We chase bugs at night (some of us know how to get on mommie's car hood and that turns the motion light on) and we check out the buildings--we can find field mice there. There are moles around and who knows what we may find; we just have fun looking. I'm heading back out now to see what I might find. Then its a nap on the deck. :) Socks

New places

I found a new place to sleep. A few days ago I found that if I climbed on top of the big trash can (outside) the lid will flatten in the center and it is a comfy place to snooze. Everytime mommie has come to check on me, that is where she's found me. It's a good place to watch everyone. I can see who's coming and going. I saw a kitten the other night. Mommie and Donald tried to catch it (now that was funny-it ran under mommie's car, then Donald's car then dad's jimmy and back and forth, back and forth. ). They never caught it but left food out and it ate. It was gone the next day. I hope it doesn't come back, our family is big enough (and I think mommie agrees-but she was worried about the little one). :) Socks

I have become pretty much an outdoors cat. I may come inside to nap during the day and to eat. But I prefer to be outdoors. Mommie keeps towels and beds outside on the deck and I like to sleep there alot. Mommie doesn't see me much, unless I am hungry. She says I have become the watch cat for our house. I have had some fights lately with a stray cat. He must have been on his own for a long time because he won't come anywhere near mommie. She would like to catch him, get him spayed, then release him again, but he's not going for it. She was really upset when he and I got into it the other night. I heard her screaming and screaming. That kind of scared me, but I did go back to the house and she was really happy to see me. I was just fine, this time. The last time I ended up with a split mouth. Mommie was really upset. She threatens to harm the stray, but then she feels sorry for him. I probably wouldn't mind him, if he wouldn't spray the deck. It's sad that people won't take care of their cats. I have to say that I was blessed to have found my way to mommie's. Maybe one day the stray will realize that he can be blessed too. Until then, it's Socks on the watch. :) Socks

I turned a year old this past Sunday. Mommie almost forgot, she was still tired from Mary Beth's wedding. But, she remembered before it was past, and she sang to me.

On Tuesday Mommie found a sore between my shoulder blades. It is about the size of a quarter, light pink and wet. This is the 3rd time that this has happened. The first time mommie thought that I had messed around some old tin and skinned myself. Then a couple of months ago when it was time for me to have Frontline, I had another spot and then once again it is time for Frontline and another spot has appeared. Mommie is wondering if I could be sensitive to Frontline, and it is causing a hot spot to occur after it has been applied (we are talking 5 to 6 weeks after it was put on me). At the vet's, they said mommie should try advantage to see if it happens again. Mommie is waiting for the place to heal, then she will try the new stuff. She doesn't want to have to take care of a second place at the same time (I wouldn't like it too much either).
