Update on "Sugar Kitty"

I had unexpected news at the vet this week, things are still a bit difficult for me. I'm still going to the vet weekly and we're still trying to regulate my insulin dose. Last week my bloodsugar was too low, not dangerously low, but low enough I had to have Karo. My dose was reduced to 3 units twice daily. Well, again this week it was low and I had to have Karo, ugggggggg. I spit out enough that I had a sticky chest and face, being sticky is not a good feeling :(
The good news is that I'm down to a dose of 2 units 2xday, Dr. P thinks with my change in diet and weight loss I may be one of those kitties who correct themselves and get off insulin or I'll be on a low dose. I hope I'll soon be regulated and can stop going down the mountain weekly.
Today it was very cold. So Mom put the fleece and pillow from my carrier into the dryer and warmed it for me so I'd be warm and cozy for the trip.
I feel better and sometimes play and act like a kitten. All the good care I've had and the purrs and prayers are helping me heal.
Hugs and purrs to my friends.
Love, Gentleman Jack

178!!!!!

Tremendously good news! My blood sugar was within normal range yesterday.
It was 178, which is an excellent reading. I'm staying on 4 units of insulin twice a day for now and will return next week. Also, the shadows on my lungs are nearly cleared up. It's been a stressful time for all of us and this is such good news. I'm so thankful for the good care Mom, Dad and Dr. P have given me and all the purr/prayers from my furriends. I also feel good, I'm running and playing more and my appetite is excellent.
But, enough about me. My family has watched the storm coverage and prayed for the best for all the people and pets affected by it. It sounds like it's going to be a long haul to get services restored and clean-up and repairs done. It makes me appreciate all the more my warm house, clean water and all those things in daily life we tend to take for granted.
I am thankful,
Gentleman jack

Grumpy Gentleman

Well....it was another trip to the vet yesterday and quite frankly I was just not in the mood nor was I amused :(
When I saw the carrier come out I ran and Aby's can be incredibly swift when we choose to be. I cleverly found a good hiding place under the bed and thought I was well hidden but Mom found me and coaxed me out. I grumbled a bit at first then settled down for the ride.
There was good news, my blood sugar is coming down, so, we'll keep working on getting the amount of insulin right. I'm thankful for the good care I'm getting from Dr. Prince and staff and how Mom and Dad love me and take care of me.
I was grumpy at the start of the day and at the end of the day I was on my soft bed in the fresh air and sunshine watching leaves fall from the beautiful trees, I thought of my seasons in the sun and the joy in my life.
Peaceful purrs,
Gentleman Jack

Keep Calm and Carry On

This popular phrase seems to fit my situation at this point.
I'm feeling better and more able to enjoy my daily life, I love my brushings, fresh air, naps and my appetite is good. My lungs continue to show some clearing-but lung disease is complicated and there is still uncertainty and concern.
My blood sugar is slowly responding to the insulin and I'm now on 4 units twice daily. Mom has been concerned with the dose going up about 'crashes' but Dr. P explained how to help me if this should happen and that the insulin for kitties is such an improvement over using human insulin that this is less likely.
Mom says I've been angelic about all this, I don't mind my shots and I behave like a gentleman at the vet, well, after all, my name is Gentleman Jack :)
We'll go back in a week for another check and meanwhile, will work at Keeping Calm and Carrying On...if I were a human, I'd fix myself a nice pot of tea and sit down with a good book.
Hugs and purrs, Gentleman Jack

Update on Jack

I'm getting used to going down the mountain to the vet, I hardly cry anymore. I got the usual prodding and poking :( but there was some good news. My right lung is clear and there has been improvement in my left lung.
So, next week I get another xray and we're hoping for more good news.
My blood sugar was still high and my insulin dose was increased to 3 units. Dr. P says it can take a while to get me regulated. I am feeling better, I'm drinking less water and the litter box is much less wet. Mom says I look like I feel better, I'm sleeping better and my appetite is better.
We're sending big thank yous to all our friends who purred and thought about us during this difficult time. Love to everyone.

Jack was unable to be at the Blessing of the Animals Service but he was blessed and he is receiving purrs for healing.
The service was held under a grove of pawsome ginko trees on a sunny beautiful day. Kitties and doggies and their persons gathered in peace and friendship.
We feel hopeful that the diabetes will be manageable and the lung problem can be treated.

Jack's trip to the vet

Jack is home taking a nice nap. The diabetes had not responded as well as hoped, the blood sugar was still 358, a bit higher than last week. Dr. Prince increased the dose to 2 units, twice a day. Increasing the dose must be done carefully to avoid hypoglycemia and a "crash." We're hopeful about more improvement.
His chest xray did show some improvement. Since the needle biopsy does carry some risk, Dr. P decided to give Jack another antibiotic injection and have him return in two weeks.
Long term, the diabetes has a good chance of being managed. The lung condition is still up in the air. Had a long talk about possible outcomes, for now will just take it day by day and give thanks for having a wonderful creature of God like Jack in our lives.
By the way, St. Frances Day is Oct. 4,will take Jack's picture to be blessed since he's not able to go in purrson, the Blessing of the Animals Services are always heartwarming.
Hugs and purrs to all our friends.

Asking purrs for Wednesday

Tomorrow Jack goes back to Dr. P. He'll get his blood sugar tested to see how the new dose of insulin, 1 1/2, units has worked and he'll get a chest xray to see how much the antibiotic has helped clear his lungs.
Also, the big thing will be a needle biopsy of the lungs to try to determine what is causing the shadow on the xray.
We're hoping for the best.
Hugs and purrs from Gentleman Jack and Momcatt

Hopeful news

My pawrents and I are feeling hopeful after out trip to Dr. Prince. He is such a caring and calm vet, we're so pleased to have him as our doctor.
First, my blood sugar has improved! It went from 468 ten days ago to 315 today on one unit of insulin! This is good news. Mom says the litter box is less wet and the water bowl is not emptying quite as fast. Dr. P increased my dose for the next week to 1 1/2 units. They discussed my progress and are learning more about diabetes.
In the past kitties had to use human insulin. I'm so thankful that now there is an insulin just for cats and vets are seeing better results.
Now, about my lung condition. There is some improvement in my lung but the area of 'consolidation' is still there. Dr. P says we will let the medicine have another week to heal then we'll go back for a chest xay to see where we are. We discussed possible steps at that point depending on how much more my lung clears.
I'm a tired kitty, I'm going to get some fresh air and take a nap.
Hugs and purrs, Gentleman Jack

Good news about the diabetes at this point, it's sounding like something that can be managed and Jack can have a good quaiity of life.
The lung problem is still a big concern. Will just have to stay hopeful and purr/pray about that. Don't know yet what is causing that and it could be a number of things. Just thankful Jack is feeling better and sleeping better.
Thanks to all our friends for your support, it has helped tremendously.
Hugs, Jack's Mom
