Three cheers for Newman! He wrote a diary entry entitled "Step Away from the Squirt Bottle!" I think he must have read my previous diary entry where I talked about Mom squirting me with water to prevent me from chewing on wires.

You see, I am a naughty little orangie kitten. It goes with the territory. I’m cute as a button, but boy do I like to cause trouble! I climb walls, shred paper, chew electrical cords, and cause trouble wherever I go. Mom was getting frustrated with me. She decided to try the squirt bottle as a last resort to see if she could deter me from chewing. Well, Newmie says that’s not a good idea. I’m quoting his diary entry:

“Squirt Bottles are a Terrible Cat Training Tool

Professional trainers all agree that using a squirt bottle of water is NOT an effective way to discourage a cat from any behavior. All it really does is make him fearful of the spray bottle itself - NOT the activity he's doing when he gets squirted.

Some cats will also bear resentment towards the person who wields the water gun, so not only does it not register to deter the unwanted behavior, it can also have a negative impact on your relationship with your cat."

I have stopped chewing cords, at least for now. Mom doesn’t know if it was the squirt bottle that actually stopped me, but she’s very happy I’ve been a good boy for the past couple of days. Mom felt terrible whenever she squirt me, but getting electrocuted didn’t seem like such a good thing either!

Thanks, Newmie, for sticking up for me! The Squirt Bottle has been retired!

That's very interesting about those squirt bottles. Like I said before, mama DID use on me, but I think she has changed her mind! Go Newman! You changed mama's mind also!

Meowmy & Pawpa did use squirt bottles on Pumpkin and I's because everyone was sayings to Meowmy oh get a squirt bottle yous gotta haves a squirt bottle but now she knows that it doesn't work and thats we's just gets scared on the bottle whens theys gets it out so now theys don't use it on us. Plus it makes everythings wet.

We have a friend who was a "vtctim" of the squirt bottle....it didn't work wif him. He thought it was a toy 'n liked being squirted. Did I tell you he wasn't playing in a full litter box? mol!

I'm furry glad to hear that you are not chewing on wires any more! Whew! We worried about you a lot. I can't remember if mommy effur used a squirt bottle on us... I think she may have tried it with my angel sisfur, Gabby. But Gabby purrty much did whatever she wanted to anyway! MOL!

Oh yeah! Mom used the 'squirt technique' on me a few times and yes, it just made me afraid of the squirt bottle itself. Now all she has to do is set the squirt bottle wherever she wants me to stay clear of! Mol! That works much better! :)

The idea of the squirt bottle is to not let us kitties know that it actually is a squirt bottle with a human man-powering it. Ok…. like we are that s-t-u-p-i-d! We know it's the squirt bottle spraying us and we also know that it's probably a human purposely spraying us. (Or is it? Ha!)

So happy that you stopped chewing on cords!

It just occurred to Mam 'n me....I know, I know, we are pretty slow on the draw right now (read my diary)....maybe your mom should try spraying something like Boundary on the electric cords.
